As a long-time Marvel fan, I must say that the latest development in Avengers #18 has left me utterly amazed and excited! The departure of one God of Thunder and the arrival of another X-Man among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is nothing short of breathtaking.
As one Marvel superhero joins the Avengers, the original team members bid farewell to a comrade who was present at its inception. The Avengers are adapting following the Blood Hunt incident that reshaped the Marvel Universe. Doctor Doom now holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme, vampires can now walk during daylight, and Miles Morales has become a permanent night-dweller. Amidst all this chaos, the Avengers are seeking to strengthen their ranks with a newcomer, who is no stranger to being part of Earth’s most powerful heroes. However, it turns out that welcoming a hero meant saying goodbye to another team member.

Issue #18 of the Avengers features the creative collaboration of Jed MacKay, Valerio Schiti, Bryan Valenza, and Cory Petit from VC. The Avengers are working on a strategy to halt Hyperion, who is hurtling towards Earth with the objective of splitting it in two. Hyperion is still seething over his world being erased during the Heroes Reborn event series and seeks to vent his anger on our planet. Captain America (Sam Wilson) had only recently asked Storm from the X-Men to join their team when they received news of Hyperion’s actions.
Fortunately, the Avengers manage to halt Hyperion’s rampage and devise a plan that not only preserves his life but safeguards every inhabitant on Earth. Later, Thor and Storm converse within the Impossible City, the latest floating base of the Avengers. Thor inquires if Storm has pondered her team invitation further, to which he reveals that there’s a hidden reason behind his eagerness for Storm to join the Avengers.
Why Storm replaces Thor on The Avengers
Thor is encouraging Storm to become an Avenger since he intends to temporarily step away due to the recent accusations of murder against him in “Immortal Thor.” These allegations have become a heavy burden for the Thunder God, and he fears the negative publicity might negatively impact the Avengers. Additionally, he doesn’t want his distractions to endanger his teammates.
In summary, the Avengers are essentially switching one God of Thunder for another, as Storm – an omega-level mutant capable of controlling weather – is comparable in power to Thor. With Thor’s departure, the Avengers gain an X-Man among their team. The X-Men and Avengers previously collaborated against Orchis, and this partnership persists here. Given that the upcoming issue of Avengers promises a confrontation with Doctor Doom, they will undoubtedly require all the aid they can muster.
