The Babadook Returning to Theaters for 10th Anniversary

As a long-time fan of the eerie and unsettling, I can’t help but get excited about the return of Jennifer Kent’s masterpiece, “The Babadook,” to the silver screen. It was back in 2014 when this horror gem first graced us with its chilling presence at Sundance, and though it didn’t quite break box office records, it certainly left an indelible mark on horror enthusiasts like myself.

In 2014, Jennifer Kent’s “The Babadook” made a substantial impact in the horror genre, particularly at film festivals where it reigned from the Sundance Film Festival throughout the year. Although movies like “Annabelle” and “Ouija” were the biggest financial hits of the year, “The Babadook” didn’t have the same impact financially but grew in popularity over time, especially among home video viewers who came to appreciate the titular character as a defining monster of the 2010s. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, “The Babadook” is returning to theaters, providing fans with their first chance to experience it on the big screen since its initial release. Tickets will be available starting August 14th, with the movie set to return on September 19th.

To celebrate a decade since the release of the legendary indie horror flick, The Babadook, I’m thrilled to share that IFC Films, alongside Iconic Events Releasing, is giving fans like me a chance to relive this modern masterpiece on the big screen! As an added bonus, writer and director Jennifer Kent will join us for an exclusive Q&A session. Can’t wait to be part of this special event!

In the narrative, six years following her husband’s brutal demise, Amelia (Essie Davis) finds herself adrift. She grapples with disciplining her unruly 6-year-old son, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), whom she finds hard to cherish. Samuel claims that a monster haunts his dreams and believes it’s the Babadook, a creature he suspects is planning to harm them. When an ominous book titled ‘The Babadook’ mysteriously appears at their residence, Samuel becomes convinced that this villain from his nightmares is real. His hallucinations intensify, making him increasingly unstable and aggressive. Confronted by her son’s erratic behavior, Amelia feels genuinely alarmed and resorts to medication. However, when Amelia starts noticing unsettling manifestations around her, she comes to realize that the menace Samuel has been forewarning her about might indeed be genuine.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film “The Babadook” boasts around 250 reviews and an impressive 98% positive response rate, which is quite remarkable for any movie, especially a horror one. Despite being snubbed by the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards, it received accolades from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards in categories such as Best Original Screenplay, Best Direction, and Best Film.

Tickets for The Babadook go on sale on August 14th before it returns to theaters on September 19th.
