The Batman 2 Director Matt Reeves Confirms Talks About Robert Pattinson as the DCU Dark Knight: “We’ll Have to See Where That Goes”

As a die-hard movie fan, I’m thrilled to share that Matt Reeves’ gripping Batman Crime Saga carries on in “The Batman: Part II” – and there’s even talk about its expansion within the broader DC Universe. James Gunn, one of DC Studios’ co-chiefs, recently hinted at merging Reeves’ universe and bestowing Robert Pattinson with the title of DCU’s Dark Knight. Now, Reeves himself has given an update on “The Batman” sequel, set to begin filming this year. He told MTV News that we can expect the next installment of his Crime Saga, slated for a theater release in October 2027.

Reeves expressed that the key factor in incorporating Pattinson and the Batman narrative into Gunn’s DC Universe hinges on whether it aligns with the storyline they’re calling the “Epic Crime Saga.” What excites him is that there’s a tale he wants to spin, and being able to unfold this story is important to him.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the team at DC Studios, specifically Gunn and Safran who are working on ‘The Penguin’ and ‘The Batman: Part II’, as well as my own project, 6th & Idaho, have been incredibly supportive. They’re giving us the creative freedom we need, allowing us to proceed with our plans. It’s a truly collaborative effort that I’m excited to be part of!

Reeves added, ‘As for what lies ahead, I can’t predict it accurately. At the moment, all I know is that I’m focused on starting production for The Batman: Part II, and my aim is to create something extraordinary – naturally, that’s the top priority.’

When asked about the possibility of Robert Pattinson playing Batman in the DC Universe, Reeves replied, “Well, I’m not sure. We’ll need to wait and see where that leads us.

In addition to his role as an executive producer on the 1940s-inspired animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader”, produced by Reeves’ 6th & Idaho Productions, he will also produce two upcoming projects under DC Studios – a live-action “Clayface” film scripted by Mike Flanagan and an animated film titled “Dynamic Duo”. Previously, Reeves had overseen the development of a “Arkham Asylum” series which was initially planned as part of his universe, but this project has since been abandoned following clarification from Gunn that it would also be part of the DC Universe.

Lately, Gunn has shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that they consider and chat about everything regarding the possibility of incorporating The Batman universe into the newly launched DC Universe. The mature animated series, Creature Commandos, penned by Gunn, serves as the initial title in the rebooted canon, set to officially debut with his upcoming Superman film this summer. Notably, recent episodes of Creature Commandos have included brief, shadowy appearances by the DCU Batman, hinting at a potential connection.

Gunn stated, “It would be foolish not to take a look at this,” before mentioning that DC Studios is dedicated to exploring Elseworlds tales that lie beyond the traditional DC Universe narrative. One of the first projects approved by Gunn and Safran is The Brave and the Bold, a series that will present the DCU’s Batman and Robin (Damian Wayne) for the very first time.

James Gunn expressed his desire to have the flexibility to create Elseworlds tales. He explained, “We aim to craft a narrative where Superman is significantly distinct from his usual DC Universe character. Our goal is to explore these characters in unique ways. One aspect that I appreciate about DC comics compared to Marvel is the abundance of Elseworlds stories. There are numerous variations of Wonder Woman, Batman, and particularly Superman, appearing in different Elseworlds tales. I believe this diversity is a big part of what makes DC exciting.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’ve always had a soft spot for the fantastical side of Gotham City – specifically, characters like Mister Freeze and Clayface who add an extra dash of magic to the Batman universe. However, it seems that Matt Reeves is taking a more realistic approach with his take on villains, as evidenced by Colin Farrell’s gritty portrayal of The Penguin and Paul Dano’s intense version of The Riddler.

In Reeves’ opinion, he is instinctively attracted to discovering down-to-earth interpretations of everything, as he stated in 2022. To him, it would be intriguing to explore how this could be achieved, even for characters like Mr. Freeze – a story with immense potential. He believes that there exists a grounded, realistic version of such a narrative that could prove incredibly powerful and impressive.

He enjoys the magical aspect of Batman in the comics, but this version, despite being true to the source material, doesn’t seem as mystical. Instead of embracing the fantastical, he wonders if we could explore a more grounded interpretation. So, for him, it would be intriguing to peel back that layer of magic and ask, ‘How could this fit into a realistic context?’

Warner Bros. has scheduled the DC Studios’ Superman for July 11, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow set for June 26, 2026. This will be followed by Clayface on September 11, 2026, and DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s Dynamic Duo on June 30, 2028. The Batman: Part II has been postponed by a year from October 2, 2026, to October 1, 2027. As of now, DC Studios has not announced a release date for the DCU Batman movie The Brave and the Bold, which will be directed by Andy Muschietti, who is also known for his work on The Flash film.
