As a seasoned film enthusiast with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the potential introduction of Barry Keoghan’s Joker in the upcoming The Batman trilogy has me intrigued. The idea of seeing this enigmatic character evolve and grow throughout multiple films is a tantalizing prospect.
Barry Keoghan’s Joker could have the final say in The Batman trilogy. Following his brief appearance in 2022’s The Batman film and a deleted scene later released online, director Matt Reeves clarified that the cameo did not foreshadow The Batman Part II. Instead, Reeves suggested that the scene served to convey a message: “If you think the trouble in Gotham is going away, forget it. It’s already here.

Based on information from Derek Faraci on the Marvelvision podcast, it’s been suggested that the Joker won’t be featured in “The Batman Part II,” but will instead take center stage in “The Batman Part III.” The report hints that Joaquin Phoenix may initially appear in a spin-off series similar to “The Penguin,” although it’s undecided if this will focus on the Joker or another Batman villain.
Reeves, together with producer Dylan Clark, were planning a future Batman spinoff series based around Gotham City Police Department and Arkham Asylum. However, these plans didn’t materialize. It’s speculated that the Arkham series might have been revised to center on Keoghan’s Joker character, following the success of HBO’s The Penguin, which depicts Oz Cobbs’ (Colin Farrell) rise after the events of The Batman film.
The competitive landscape for streaming cable was a given for some prominent figures, and Casey Bloys, HBO CEO, was quick to express his need for a standout character. This was the reasoning behind spinning off Penguin, played by Farrell, into his own series, as Clark explained to ComicBook. “Casey said ‘I need a marquee character,'” Clark explained. “And Matt had a fantastic idea for Colin in the second film.” Casey wanted this concept. Characters like these can’t be confined solely to the movie realm. Hence, it was a logical move to transition them, and we have exciting plans to develop more characters from our movie universe with Casey and Sarah Aubrey (HBO Max original programming chief) in mind. The Joker and Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman are examples of such marquee characters, and HBO is currently working on an unannounced television series set within the world of ‘The Batman’.
Warner Bros. Pictures has dated The Batman Part II for October 2, 2026.
