As a seasoned gamer of Gotham City’s digital underworld, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement as The Penguin graces our screens this week. After years of anticipation, we finally get to delve deeper into the world that Matt Reeves has so masterfully crafted in The Batman.
This week saw the premiere of “The Penguin” on Max and HBO, continuing the narrative initiated in 2020’s “The Batman”. While this spinoff series is set to bridge into “The Batman Part II”, it isn’t the only one that was initially planned. At one point, discussions revolved around a Gotham Police Department series and another centered around Arkham Asylum, but neither of them materialized. However, as per “The Batman” filmmaker Matt Reeves, there may be more tales to tell; they’ve simply evolved. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves hinted that the ideas being considered now are “evolved versions” of the original concepts.
According to Reeves, the topics we’re discussing are advanced versions of what previously existed. He didn’t mean that they failed, but rather, they needed improvement. Instead of viewing it as something that didn’t work, consider it more as a process that is progressing and moving closer to its intended goal.
Regarding the destination of “The Penguin”, it will lead straight into “The Batman Part II”. As stated by Reeves, the eight-episode limited series lays the groundwork for the next film, which serves as a direct continuation of “The Batman”, being closely tied to where we conclude things in the series.
Reeves stated that certain aspects align perfectly with how the upcoming film starts, and the manner in which Oz appears within our universe, passing the story forward to Batman who is currently engaged in a new investigation.
Despite The Penguin linking to The Batman Part II, it’s important to note that Robert Pattinson, who was initially cast as Batman, won’t be making an appearance in the series. Previously, director Matt Reeves confirmed this fact.
Rob won’t participate in the performance. It’s better to address the situation straight away. Previously, we had discussed this matter extensively, but we decided it would be more effective to delve into an extensive portrayal of a character seizing power at this juncture,” Reeves explained.
In “The Penguin,” we see Colin Farrell take on the role of Oz Cobb, with Cristin Milioti portraying Sofia Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, and Clancy Brown stepping into the shoes of Salvatore Maroni.
The Penguin debuted September 19th on HBO and Max. It will air Sundays on HBO starting September 29th. The Batman Part II is set to open in theaters in 2026.
