As a die-hard fan of Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe, I must say, it feels like I’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem with each new project he unveils. His ability to breathe such depth and complexity into our beloved characters is nothing short of remarkable. The way he intertwines these stories within the dark yet captivating world of Gotham City is truly awe-inspiring.
On Sunday, just before the finale of “The Penguin” miniseries, filmmaker Matt Reeves, who directed and co-wrote “The Batman” (2022) and will do the same for “The Batman: Part II”, shared a touching message on his social media platforms to the cast, crew, and fans. The heartfelt note was accompanied by a photo of a handwritten letter, expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the spinoff series.
I’m deeply grateful to all the fantastic fans who have been tuning in to watch THE PENGUIN, wrote Reeves. Navigating Oz through Gotham’s hidden corners alongside you on HBO has been more than I could ever hope for. A big thank you goes out to Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, and our exceptional cast who breathed such life into these characters. I must also extend my gratitude to our gifted writers, directors, and crew, as well as our showrunner, Lauren LeFranc. It’s been an honor.
Tonight, we can’t wait to reveal the climax to you! We’re eagerly anticipating presenting the next installment of our gripping crime story, which we’ve titled THE BATMAN PART II, as revealed by Reeves.
In his role as executive producer on “The Penguin,” Reeves appears to have played a significant part in the show’s creation, particularly during its initial stages and when linking it to his films. However, the Gotham depicted in “The Batman” and “The Penguin” will not align with the new DC Universe continuity overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Instead, these projects, including “Joker,” “Folie à Deux,” “Superman & Lois,” and all animated projects, have been categorized as “DC Elseworlds.” The upcoming “The Brave and the Bold” will kickstart a distinct Batman continuity within the DC Universe.
Reeves has labeled “The Batman” and “The Penguin” as the “Batman Crime Epic Saga.” Currently, he along with his team is busy working on “Batman – Chapter II,” which is set to start filming in April 2025. The sequel is planned for release in the U.S. on October 2, 2026. There have been whispers about a third movie being developed, but no concrete announcements have been made yet.
The series “The Penguin” concluded its eight-episode run on Sunday and, as of now, it’s classified as a miniseries – meaning there won’t be any more seasons in the future. Nevertheless, Reeves has made it clear that Farrell will reprise his role as the Penguin in “The Batman – Part II”. For the time being, both “The Penguin” and “The Batman” can be streamed on Max.
