As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of the Dark Knight, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and skepticism as Matt Reeves discusses the grounded approach for The Batman Part II. Don’t get me wrong; I’m all for keeping Gotham City rooted in reality, but let’s not forget that we’re talking about a city inhabited by villains like the Penguin and the Riddler!
In an interview with SFX Magazine, director Matt Reeves for “The Batman Part II” discussed his plans to keep Gotham realistic as they move forward with scriptwriting. The first film featuring Robert Pattinson as Batman generated a lot of buzz a few years ago. Now, Reeves is considering the numerous fan theories about potential villains for the sequel. Although the Gentleman Ghost would certainly be exciting, it doesn’t align with Reeves’ vision for Gotham City as a gritty and grounded setting. Therefore, while there may be some wild elements, don’t expect to see many of Batman’s more outlandish villains in this version of the DC universe.
The director expressed that his aim was to find a means to portray well-known pop icons, or mythic characters, in a way that makes Gotham seem like a real-world location. He further explained that the movies and series he creates are almost fantastical but stop short of being fully fantastical, instead maintaining a grounded feel.
The filmmaker clarified that even though you may not encounter familiar beloved characters in this new project, it’s precisely our intention to do so. However, “Gentleman Ghost” might be too extreme for us to adapt, but we plan to explore how we can introduce characters with a touch of the extraordinary and make them plausible.
How Does The Penguin Roll Into The Batman Part II?
In the upcoming scenario, The Penguin is set to link The Batman with its sequel, creating an exciting continuity. Max and HBO are thrilled about unfolding the villain’s narrative more prominently. During a recent interview, Reeves hinted at how these stories will intertwine. Interestingly, Colin Farrell’s character is expected to make an appearance in The Batman Part II as well.
Reeves pondered, “Some aspects neatly tie into how the upcoming film commences, and how Oz transitions into this world as we pass the torch to Batman, who’s currently investigating another case.”
The director hinted at taking The Batman sequel, Part II, to new depths by revealing it would explore a more extensive tale of underlying corruption, venturing into unforeseen territories compared to the initial installment. Matt Reeves explained, “The foundations for this journey are laid in the first film, and it unfolds in a manner that will reveal previously unseen aspects of the character. Batman is consistently fighting these forces, yet they can’t be entirely vanquished. Therefore, the next movie delves even further into this theme.”
