For some time now, enthusiasts of the Big Bang Theory universe have anticipated an upcoming spin-off series. Now, it’s officially confirmed that one of the original show’s dearest secondary characters will be the star. As reported by Deadline, the new installment in this extended series is titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” with Kevin Sussman’s Stuart Bloom leading the narrative. This upcoming show will air on Max, although a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. At present, no details are available regarding when production might commence.
The project titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” is currently in a state of limbo, waiting for the final approval before it’s given the go-ahead to officially commence. The team behind “The Big Bang Theory,” Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, have agreed to take on writing and executive producer roles, alongside Zak Penn, in this upcoming venture.
I was quite surprised when I learned that Stuart is the main character, but it turns out that Sussman has been part of the cast since last year. He, along with Brian Posehn and Lauren Lapkus, were said to be reprising their roles from The Big Bang Theory. Another beloved character from The Big Bang Theory, John Ross Bowie’s Barry Kripke, is also expected to make an appearance.
Ever since “The Big Bang Theory” concluded its 12-season journey in 2019, Chuck Lorre and his team have managed to keep the franchise vibrant by creating spinoffs. After seven seasons, “Young Sheldon” came to an end in May 2024, paving the way for “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” which debuted in October 2024. Notably, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” marks the first spinoff of “The Big Bang Theory,” designed specifically for streaming platforms.
Over 11 seasons of “The Big Bang Theory”, Sussman appeared in a total of 84 episodes. The character Stuart, who runs the comic book store frequented by the main gang, stood out as a popular recurring character. Most of the humor centered around Stuart was derived from his hard-luck circumstances, and given the show’s title, it appears that this theme will continue in the spinoff. For now, specific plot details are being kept secret, so we’ll have to wait and see how they tie into the show’s events. It seems improbable that Stuart will be on a quest to literally save the universe as a whole, so the series is expected to focus on his (possibly futile?) efforts to maintain stability in his own life. The relationship between Stuart and girlfriend Denise should play a significant role in the show, and it’ll be entertaining to watch Stuart interact with characters like Bert and Kripke.
Hopefully, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” will be another success for the Big Bang Theory series. Shows like “Young Sheldon” have received generally positive feedback and been a hit on CBS, and “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” is starting off well. Given Lorre’s track record of extending the franchise in creative and intriguing ways, fans should be eager to see what he has planned for “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.” It could also be exciting if some members from the original Big Bang Theory cast make a guest appearance and drop by the old comic book store.
