As a seasoned movie critic with a lifetime of cinema-viewing under my belt, I can confidently say that the global box office is a fascinating battleground where American films often reign supreme. The statistic that every movie that’s cracked $500+ million domestically has also cracked $1+ billion worldwide is a testament to this fact. However, it’s not always a surefire formula for success, as we can see with the likes of “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, two titans that fell just short of the $1 billion mark worldwide.
Did you know this interesting trivia about box office earnings? Every film that has earned over $500 million domestically (in North America) has also surpassed the $1 billion mark globally. From blockbusters like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Barbie, to Beauty and the Beast, once a movie crosses the $500+ million threshold in America, it’s almost guaranteed to reach $1.007 billion internationally. In other words, if you’re a box office hit in the US, you’re likely to become an international sensation too! This trend demonstrates how influential American cinema is on the global movie-watching culture. If something becomes extremely popular in the US, it will likely create a similar buzz overseas as well.
Contrary to popular belief, not every big-hitting movie in North America manages to earn a billion dollars globally. There are several domestic box office titans that have grossed over $400 million domestically, but fell short internationally of reaching the one-billion mark. This is an aspect worth considering given that currently, the domestic earnings of ‘Wicked’ far surpass its foreign total, which, as we speak, has yet to breach the $100 million mark. And ‘Wicked’ isn’t the only film displaying this trend. Let’s examine the highest-grossing movies in North America that didn’t quite earn enough internationally to hit the one-billion dollar worldwide total.
Why Star Wars Didn’t Hit $1 Billion Worldwide
At present, the record is held by “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” (1977). This groundbreaking film smashed box office conventions upon its initial release and quickly transformed into a pop culture icon that remains influential today, as evidenced by the recent debut of “Skeleton Crew” on Disney+. Domestically, it accumulated an impressive $460.99 million (from multiple re-releases), which ranks it as the 26th highest-grossing movie in North America to date. However, its international earnings were “only” $314.4 million, totaling a worldwide gross of $775.39 million. This is significantly lower than other films that surpassed the $450 million mark domestically.
A New Hope” made less worldwide compared to other blockbusters. During its release in 1977, the global box office landscape was quite different from what we see today. Movies like “Avengers: Endgame” could easily earn over $300 million in countries such as China in the 2010s, but “A New Hope” came out at a time when most films made almost all their profits domestically. Additionally, ticket prices during that era, even up until 1997 when the film re-entered theaters worldwide, were significantly lower than they are today.
In comparison to “A New Hope,” the 2022 film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is another blockbuster that failed to reach $1 billion globally, despite earning a substantial $453.8 million domestically. However, its international earnings only totaled $400.1 million, with the global tally at $853.9 million. In contrast, the original “Black Panther” earned $105 million in China during its run in 2018. Unfortunately, its sequel opened in China and only managed to gross $15 million. This $90 million difference is what prevented “Wakanda Forever” from reaching the $1 billion mark worldwide. Additionally, overall global box office performance in 2022 was affected by reduced attendance in key territories, which impacted the earnings of “Wakanda Forever.” While some films like “Avatar: The Way of Water” bucked the trend and performed as if it were still 2017, others like “The Batman” failed to surpass $800 million globally. Given these circumstances, it’s not surprising that “Wakanda Forever” couldn’t break the $1 billion barrier.
Shrek 2 Narrowly Missed $1 Billion
Two movie milestones stand out in history for earning over $450 million domestically without also reaching a billion globally. The highest-grossing of these is “Shrek 2,” which came close to hitting the $1 billion mark during its initial release. In 2004, “Shrek 2” made an astounding $935.4 million worldwide. With such immense popularity in 2004, it’s not unreasonable to anticipate that “Shrek 5,” slated for release in 2026, might propel the franchise into the billion-dollar territory globally.
In contrast to “Shrek 2”, the movie “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” holds the record for grossing $797.3 million worldwide. This is similar to “A New Hope” in that lower ticket prices and a pre-1990 international market allowed it to reach this figure. On the other hand, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, which ranks 34th highest-grossing movie domestically, accumulated $864.8 million globally. Although the original “Hunger Games” was significantly more popular in America than abroad, “Catching Fire” consistently earned over $350 million internationally. Lastly, “The Lion King” has grossed $988.38 million worldwide, and with another theatrical re-release, it could surpass the $1 billion mark after more than 30 years!
Among the films reviewed here, none can be considered flops, yet it’s intriguing to explore why some high-grossing movies didn’t surpass the billion-dollar mark. Admittedly, ticket prices played a role for certain ones, but it’s also essential to consider other variables that influence success in different markets. For instance, some films seem to resonate more with international viewers. This demonstrates that while a film can be incredibly successful domestically, it may not achieve the same level of global acclaim – which brings us to wonder what upcoming blockbusters possess the necessary qualities to reach the billion-dollar mark worldwide.
