What you need to know

  • The Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 beta spanned two weekends. Weekend 1 was geared toward players who had preordered the game on any platform or had a subscription to Xbox Game Pass. Weekend 2 was an open beta across all platforms, with no preorder necessary.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launches on October 25  on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Steam, the Microsoft store, and Battle.net. It is available day one with an Xbox Game Pass subscription on Xbox and the Microsoft Store.

As a seasoned gamer and researcher with decades of gaming history under my belt, I must admit that the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 beta has left me genuinely impressed. The sheer scale of it, being the biggest in the franchise’s history, is nothing short of astounding.

Treyarch Studios, along with Activision, recently announced on their official Call of Duty Twitter account that the beta for Black Ops 6 set a new record as the largest in the series’ history.

The beta for Black Ops 6 reportedly set records as the one with the highest number of participants, the most hours collectively played, the longest average playtime per player, and the greatest number of matches played compared to the betas of previous games in the series. No specific player counts were disclosed.

Some eagerness about the Black Ops 6 beta is due to its proximity to the Call of Duty: Next showcase, where Black Ops 6’s new omnimovement system was unveiled, giving players their initial glimpse at multiplayer, and presenting a sneak peek at the upcoming Warzone resurgence map called Area 99. The showcase also featured the open beta, allowing access to a scaled-down version of Black Ops 6’s multiplayer experience, with a limited selection of 16 maps from the upcoming game on a playlist that combined Hardpoint, Domination, Kill Order, and Team Deathmatch modes.

During late August and early September, the Black Ops 6 beta test ran over two weekends. Unlike past Call of Duty games, this beta wasn’t rolled out gradually across different platforms. This approach narrowed the pool of players who could try the game during the event and made it challenging to gather data for cross-platform play. The initial weekend was exclusive to those with Early Access – this group included people who had preordered Black Ops 6, received early access codes, or subscribed to Xbox Game Pass. However, the second weekend was open to all users on every platform.

At Call of Duty: Next, I participated in a group discussion with Treyarch Studios, featuring Director of Production Yale Miller and Associate Design Director Matt Scronce. Miller emphasized the significance of the beta stage, not only to let players test the game but also to gather insights on glitches and gameplay flaws. As he put it, “What keeps me awake at night is ‘What have we overlooked that we didn’t consider?’ That’s why the beta phase is crucial for us.

During the two weekends, players had a direct look at the modifications in Black Ops 6’s gameplay as Treyarch’s team tweaked the in-game sounds based on player opinions. The feedback from the preliminary access phase resulted in lowering the audio for damage impact, amplifying footstep sounds, and alterations to audio signals when an enemy is moving nearby while making sliding noises.

As a tech-savvy gamer, I’m thrilled to share that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 drops on October 25 across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms. Whether you’re an Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass subscriber, you can dive into the game without spending extra bucks right from day one, as it’s included in your subscription package! Unlike its Modern Warfare counterparts, Black Ops 6 won’t offer early access to the campaign or any other game modes before the official launch. The masterminds behind this title are none other than Treyarch Studios, with Raven Software lending a hand on the narrative side, while additional studios under Activision contribute to its development as well.
