As a devoted horror movie enthusiast with a deep appreciation for director Scott Derrickson’s chilling masterpieces, I am absolutely thrilled about the impending terror that is “The Black Phone 2“. Having been captivated by the original, I eagerly await the return of Ethan Hawke as the enigmatic Grabber, and the creative ways in which his character will be brought back to haunt us once more.
Following Halloween, Scott Derrickson continues to generate chills in cinema with a fresh wave of terror. Known for his work on Doctor Strange and Sinister, the director struck fear into audiences in 2022 through The Black Phone, a Joe Hill adaptation under Blumhouse starring Ethan Hawke. After garnering critical acclaim and grossing over $160 million at the box office, The Black Phone is now set to return for a sequel, with production on the next installment now underway.
After a long period of planning, the filming for “The Black Phone 2” officially began on Monday. Director Derrickson posted a picture from the set on social media, featuring the logo for “The Black Phone 2” on his chair’s back. In the caption, he made it clear that production on the sequel was underway.
Details concerning the plot of “The Black Phone 2” are largely shrouded in secrecy, yet there’s an overwhelming curiosity among fans about this upcoming movie. Much of this interest stems from the comeback of lead actor Ethan Hawke.
In “The Black Phone”, it’s Hawke who portrayed a menacing antagonist named the Grabber. This character had a chilling habit of abducting children and confining them, ultimately leading to their deaths. The film concluded with the Grabber apparently being defeated and killed, seemingly wrapping up his narrative. However, it has been confirmed that Hawke will reprise his role in “The Black Phone 2”, implying that the Grabber’s character will likely make a return, but the details of how remain uncertain.
In the upcoming sequel of “The Black Phone,” it’s anticipated that the main characters may receive messages from the deceased antagonist, the Grabber, beyond his death. This plot device was central in the original film, as Finney (played by Mason Thames) would receive calls on a phone in the basement where he was imprisoned, the callers being the children who had been killed earlier by the Grabber. It was through these spectral communications that Finney managed to break free and bring the Grabber to justice.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but notice another eerie supernatural aspect in “The Black Phone.” Finney’s sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), has premonitions of events before they unfold. Intriguingly, Thames and McGraw are set to reprise their roles for “The Black Phone 2,” potentially paving the way for a chilling supernatural comeback from the Grabber in the upcoming sequel.
The initial “Black Phone” film was inspired by a short story penned by Joe Hill, giving fans something to look forward to before its premiere. For the sequel, “The Black Phone 2”, Hill has crafted the storyline, but unlike the original, it hasn’t been published yet. As a result, those not part of the creative team will be going into the movie without prior knowledge.
Universal has dated The Black Phone 2 for release on October 17, 2025.
