In an upcoming RPG titled “The Blood of Dawnwalker“, developed by team members from “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt“, the game’s world will be smaller than typical open-world titles, according to creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz. In an interview with GamesRadar, he explained that this choice was made so players can become more familiar with the game’s world.
During the interview, Tomaszkiewicz discussed a preference he has for open-world games that encompass smaller areas instead of vast expanses. By doing so, players can leisurely traverse and discover the game world at their own comfortable speed, rather than feeling pressured to hurriedly explore in order to uncover intriguing aspects.
Tomaszkiewicz explained that the world was open but smaller, which led him to perceive it differently compared to vast universes. In large worlds, it’s challenging to remember every hidden corner because of their immense size, so one tends to hurry through them. However, when a world is more compact and allows for leisurely exploration, memories of places form more easily, making it feel like you truly know the location. It gives a sense of inhabitation.
It’s intriguing that Tomaszkiewicz mentioned a leisurely approach for the game, given that director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz earlier disclosed that the narrative of “The Blood of Dawnwalker” will be confined within a 30-day timeframe in the game. With Coen’s desperate attempt to save his family from impending doom at the heart of the storyline.
Regarding the possibility of mini-games in The Blood of Dawnwalker similar to Gwent from The Witcher 3, Tomaszkiewicz mentioned that players will need to balance their engagement with side content and the main quest. This is facilitated by a sense of urgency due to a time limit, encouraging players not to neglect the main storyline.
Tomaszkiewicz stated, “This matter is of utmost significance to me. When combined, it creates something truly extraordinary – an intensified sense of urgency in games can be amplified. For instance, consider playing ‘The Witcher 3’. You know that Ciri needs assistance, yet you choose to play Gwent instead. This feeling arises because it’s a game, and it’s a really entertaining game. However, it’s still just a game.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excited about Studio Rebel Wolves’ approach to creating a narrative sandbox for players. This implies that not only will I have numerous story choices to make, but also a great deal of gameplay freedom. That freedom even stretches to the point where I might be able to eliminate significant non-player characters in the game. Mateusz talked about this in an interview earlier this month, highlighting the narrative sandbox aspect of ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker’.
Mateus explained that this is like a playground where we’re aiming to offer you numerous choices in the game. However, it’s not just about the gameplay; we’ve been emphasizing our strengths, which lie in crafting compelling narratives, developing well-rounded characters, and creating a wealth of lore for players to explore.
The video game titled ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker’ is currently under development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. As of now, there hasn’t been an announced release date. Interestingly, this open-world RPG will not feature flashy magic effects, so keep an eye out for further updates.
