The Brave and the Bold Director’s Update on DCU Batman Film Will Disappoint Fans

As a long-standing devotee of the silver screen and comic book universe, I must confess my heart skips a beat whenever a new piece of news about the DCU lands in my inbox. The latest tidbit concerning the delay of Andy Muschietti’s Batman film, “The Brave and the Bold,” has sent ripples through the fan community, and I find myself once again navigating the labyrinthine world of DC Studios and Warner Bros.’ production plans.

Next year, James Gunn’s Superman film will mark the major debut of the DCU franchise, however, don’t anticipate a Batman movie to appear soon after. In a recent interview, director Andy Muschietti (IT, The Flash) disclosed that DC Studios has temporarily halted the development of the Batman film The Brave and the Bold, which Muschietti is set to direct. This revelation will undoubtedly disappoint Batman enthusiasts and fuel further speculation about how Warner Bros. and DC Studios are managing various Batman movie projects.

In conversation with Sebastián De Caro from California Secreta, Muschietti stated (roughly translated from Spanish) that “The Batman [The Brave and The Bold] project has been delayed slightly. I may work on another film prior to that.

The statement aligns with what James Gunn, head of DC Studios, has been hinting at for a while. In early December, during the launch of his new DCU animated series, ‘Creature Commandos’, Gunn provided an update on eagerly-awaited projects like ‘The Brave and the Bold’: he shared their current status.

Right from the start, I’ve been firm about one thing for DC: we won’t shoot any scripts until they are fully prepared, and I won’t film anything unless I’m completely satisfied with it,” Gunn explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Later, he mentioned that, “I need to feel a connection… Booster Gold, Waller, The Brave and the Bold – they’re not quite at that level yet. They aren’t fully developed as I want them to be.

At first glance, it appears that DC Studios and WB are employing a prudent strategy focusing on quality control during pre-production, especially for key projects like Batman films. However, given the political dynamics and transformations within these franchise universes over time, fans have become accustomed to behind-the-scenes machinations.

For Batman, there’s an ongoing dilemma regarding brand confusion with Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” series, which is distinct from the DCU or Superman universe. The sequel to “The Batman,” titled “The Batman: Part II,” is scheduled for release in October 2026, occupying the next two years for production, post-production, and theater distribution. With the success of the spinoff series “The Penguin,” speculation arose about releasing “The Batman 2” and “The Brave and Bold” sequentially. However, it appears that won’t be the plan moving forward.

As a passionate movie critic, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Andy Muschietti’s upcoming project, “The Brave and the Bold.” However, if production doesn’t kick off next year, it seems we might have to wait until 2028 or 2029 to catch it in cinemas. The intriguing part is how James Gunn will handle Batman’s presence within the DCU outside of a solo movie.

Right now, you can catch “Creature Commandos” on Max. On July 11, 2025, “Superman” will hit the big screens.
