Peacock is partnering with Seth MacFarlane, creator of “Family Guy”, to create a fresh TV show inspired by the 1989 movie “The ‘Burbs”. The original film featured Tom Hanks and revolved around a young couple discovering that their new neighborhood isn’t as idyllic as they thought. Celeste Hughey, known for shows like “Palm Royale” and “Dead to Me”, will write and serve as executive producer for the series. Emmy Award winner Keke Palmer (“Nope”, “Password”) will also star in and produce the show
The series is set to shoot in Los Angeles, specifically at Universal Studios Hollywood where the original movie was filmed on their backlot. Produced by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, “The ‘Burbs” – a blend of horror and comedy – saw Brian Grazer as its producer and featured Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher in leading roles
The show, which is based on a popular classic, is the most recent adaptation destined for Peacock. Previous projects such as Ted and Saved By the Bell have paved the way. According to the official summary, “The Burbs, currently set in contemporary suburbia, follows a young couple returning to the husband’s childhood home. Their lives are disrupted when enigmatic new neighbors arrive next door, unearthing long-kept secrets of the cul-de-sac and introducing deadly perils that shatter the idyllic image of their seemingly peaceful neighborhood.”
The initial film was one of Tom Hanks’ early comedic productions, created during the period he also made movies such as “Splash” and “The Man With One Red Shoe”. This production marked the culmination of an extremely productive decade for Fisher, who appeared in two “Star Wars” films, “The Blues Brothers”, and “Hannah and Her Sisters”
Seth MacFarlane (“Ted”), Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson will be the executive producers for Fuzzy Door, alongside Brian Grazer (“Empire”, “Arrested Development”) who will do the same for Imagine Entertainment. Additionally, Dana Olsen, writer of the 1989 film, will serve as co-executive producer on the series. UCP (known for shows like “Suits” and “Ted”), a division of Universal Studio Group, is responsible for producing this series
Under its overarching TV agreement with Universal Content Productions (UCP), Fuzzy Door’s upcoming venture is a television series adaptation
Hughey serves as a writer and executive producer, with other EPs including Grazer (Empire, Arrested Development), Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment; MacFarlane (Ted), Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson for Fuzzy Door; and Dana Olsen (The ‘Burbs).
