The Casting of Frank Stone Preview: A Deeper & Darker Look at Dead by Daylight’s Lore

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that Supermassive Games has once again delivered a chilling narrative experience with “The Casting of Frank Stone“. The preview alone had me on edge, and not just because of the dark, creepy mill setting or the mysterious woman, Augustine Lieber. No, it was the broken flashlight incident that really got my heart racing!

Approaching swiftly on September 3rd is Supermassive Games’ spin-off title for the Dead by Daylight universe, which delves deeper into the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game’s dark lore, appealing to fans who have been intrigued by the original. The release of The Casting of Frank Stone fits snugly in Supermassive Games’ lineup – it’s an immersive narrative experience where your decisions shape the story’s progression, similar to their previous works like Until Dawn. This means that every character you grow attached to could vanish with a single skill check, quick-time event, or even a wrong choice from dialogue options.

In this sneak peek, I assume the role of Sam, a sheriff’s deputy on a mission to find a lost child. It becomes evident early on that Sam is the only one truly committed to the search. The hunt for the missing child takes me to the eerie steel mill in Cedar Hills, where my dim flashlight fails to illuminate potential dangers lurking in the shadows (as always…). As I cautiously explore in the dark, guided by an overpowering stench of decay, I find myself at the mill’s furnace. A mishap with a skill check results in a broken flashlight, ramping up my heart rate significantly. After making swift decisions near the end of the preview, I manage to save the lost child and foil Frank Stone’s plans. However, things don’t end on a positive note. Shortly following the rescue, a woman named Augustine Lieber materializes to deliver a chilling monologue about the Entity, hinting at more intrigue yet to unfold in the game.

As a curious gamer, diving into this upcoming title has given me a tantalizing sneak peek into the world of Frank Stone. The prologue’s events have set the stage, offering a hint of the captivating narrative that awaits me. From what I’ve gathered from promotional materials, it seems our adventure will revolve around a vibrant group of contemporaries, delving into the history of Frank Stone while uncovering eerie supernatural aspects as the plot unfolds. The mere taste I’ve had so far has left my imagination buzzing with excitement over the potential storylines that lie ahead.

If you’re playing The Casting of Frank Stone because you love horror games (you really need to enjoy this genre to buy such a title), Supermassive has certainly met the mark when it comes to tone and setting expectations – I can already tell, based on just one location. The Prologue was incredibly eerie and effectively built tension and apprehension in the player. As I previously mentioned, Sam is wandering around a dark mill at night with only his flashlight to illuminate his surroundings, even though there aren’t many jump scares this early in the game, you still can’t help but feel on edge, wondering what might be lurking around corners or waiting for you at the foot of the stairs as you navigate through the mill.

In a refreshing change for Supermassive Games, the third-person perspective in their latest title, The Casting of Frank Stone, makes exploration much more accessible than in their past games. By controlling the camera from this third-person view, you can fully immerse yourself in the game’s setting and hunt down collectibles hidden within the environment, which I found to be among my favorite video game collectibles yet. The thrill of discovering these items was a highlight of playing through the Prologue, second only to the adrenaline rush it provided. While I won’t spoil what these collectibles are, I can tell you that as a fan of slasher franchises, I couldn’t wait to complete the collections in this game.

It’s intriguing to speculate about how The Casting of Frank Stone fits into the broader Dead by Daylight storyline once it’s fully released. We wonder, what connection does Frank Stone have to the Entity and the Fog, and how will the events in this game influence the future tales of Dead by Daylight? For now, these questions remain veiled in enigma, but only for a brief span of time, as The Casting of Frank Stone debuts on September 3rd for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. After a one-hour sneak peek at the game, I’m eagerly anticipating delving deeper into the narrative as soon as it’s available.
