The Challenge's Stars Share Why the Win Means More Than the Cash Prize

As a die-hard fan of The Challenge, I can truly appreciate the grit and determination that each contestant brings to the table. Watching Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio’s journey over the years has been nothing short of inspiring. His dedication to the game, his unwavering spirit, and his humility in the face of success are qualities that I admire immensely.

For some stars of The Challenge, feeling like a million bucks means more than pocketing it.

“Pride is a hell of a thing,” Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio mused in an exclusive interview with TopMob News’ Francesca Amiker. “Being able to raise that trophy and being able to say you won, to me, goes a lot further than the money at the end.”

He acknowledges the value of the approximately $1.1 million he’s made from his record-breaking seven victories, but it’s not just about the money for him.

The cast member from The Real World: Key West agreed, “It certainly looks pleasant,” they said. “However, many people underestimate how incredibly challenging this show is, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. There’s always an element of luck involved each season since it’s impossible to reach the final without some fortune smiling upon you.”

In simple terms, before tackling T.J. Lavin’s tough finals, competitors find it incredibly challenging to win and lift the trophy. Although money is a nice reward, the sense of accomplishment from winning is far more fulfilling.

Ever since that heartbreaking moment when my championship aspirations were shattered during my rookie year in the 2023 season of Ride or Dies, I’ve been haunted by an insatiable longing to prove myself – Olivia Kaiser. That freak accident where a golf ball was headed straight for me in the final round still echoes vividly in my memory, leaving me determined more than ever to reclaim what was taken from me that day.

She explained to TopMob News, “Well, there are only a few seasons to compete in, aren’t there? With just one or two winners typically, becoming a champion is extremely tough. There might be other ways to make money throughout life, but being hailed as the winner of a Challenge, that’s challenging and uncommon. So, I really want to win.”

It wasn’t the case that every contestant who spoke with TopMob about “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras,” where veterans face off against stars from different eras of the show, were unwilling to prioritize their ego over the monetary reward.

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but echo the words of Kyland Young, a seasoned Big Brother contestant who recently graced The Challenge: USA in 2022. With a sparkle in his eyes, he shared, “Sometimes, I even forget there’s a prize at stake.” On the other hand, the indomitable Emily Schromm, returning to the limelight after over a decade, asserted with unwavering pride, “For me, it’s all about honor. Pure and simple honor.”

But four-time winner Darrell Taylor stressed, “It’s all about the money, man.”

Hard same, agreed Leroy Garrett. He suited up for season 40 mere weeks after fiancée and fellow Challenge vet Kam Williams welcomed their second child, daughter Aria joining 2-year-old son Kingston this past February.

Despite being weary of consistently coming up short, since he reached the finals in half of his 12 seasons, he eventually concluded, “I’m after the prize money. Even if you don’t win, you still receive the money? I’d gladly accept the million dollars.”

Those who don’t have a chance to enjoy fish smoothies and run several miles go away with nothing.)

Speaking candidly, Tori Deal shared, “Initially, I earned $1,000 per week for competing, and I felt like a millionaire at the time. Fast forward, and now I receive $2,000 weekly. Jokingly, I say I can’t disclose my actual earnings due to contractual obligations, but let me tell you, it’s incredible to be part of this.”

Regardless of how trivial each individual task may seem, they take their objective extremely seriously.

Tori expressed her enthusiasm about participating in “Battle of the Eras.” She feels a strong sense of pride, as they all want to don these jerseys and symbolically represent their era. It’s truly remarkable for them to unite in a single season and compete against each other.
