As a movie buff, I must admit that for a brief moment, I was thrilled about the prospect of the Cloverfield franchise becoming one of the most exhilarating new series in cinematography. The 2016 release, 10 Cloverfield Lane, sparked hopes that the 2008 Cloverfield would be the foundation for an anthology of standalone films, all bearing the Cloverfield title. The potential for innovative visuals and unique narratives under the protective umbrella of the “Cloverfield” name was tantalizing. However, like many promising plans in Tinseltown, these aspirations never fully materialized.
It’s been seven years since “The Cloverfield Paradox” premiered on Netflix following the 2018 Super Bowl. Since then, there have been occasional whispers about new Cloverfield films, but no solid information. Essentially, a franchise that had potential to grow seems to be buried, despite its return after eight years with “10 Cloverfield Lane”. Why did this storyline suddenly disappear again? What factors led to the quiet demise of the Cloverfield series?
The Cloverfield Paradox’s Adverse Ripple Effects
The issues and eventual downfall of the Cloverfield series can be traced back to the release of “The Cloverfield Paradox” in 2018. Originally intended as a more expansive addition to the franchise, “The Cloverfield Paradox” faced numerous production troubles. Most notably, during filming, a standalone movie called “God Particle” was rebranded as a Cloverfield installment. This change led to expensive reshoots that not only made the movie more similar to its predecessors but also increased its production costs substantially.
After the initially budgeted $5 million movie ballooned to a cost of $40 million, Paramount Pictures decided to offload the film title to Netflix. The turbulent production of this movie raised doubts about the Cloverfield series becoming a frequent and affordable part of Paramount’s film releases. Furthermore, the poor reception of The Cloverfield Paradox, particularly the criticism over its connection to the original Cloverfield, tarnished the reputation of the Cloverfield brand. It was refreshing to see the Cloverfield name on the big screen again in 2016; however, just two years later, it had already suffered significant damage.
The departure of producer J.J. Abrams from Paramount Pictures to a costly first-look deal with Warner Bros. in 2019 has added complexity to potential future installments of the Cloverfield series. Since Abrams now works for a competing studio, it will be challenging for new Cloverfield stories to continue at Paramount. Moreover, the busy schedules of other key personnel involved in the franchise such as Matt Reeves, Drew Goddard, Julius Onah, and Dan Trachtenberg have further complicated the production of additional Cloverfield movies.
Could Cloverfield Come Back Someday?
For quite some time now, there’s been persistent chatter and hints that additional Cloverfield movies might be in the works. Key figures like Reeves have expressed interest in revisiting this universe, while screenwriter Joe Barton drafted a script for a new installment as early as 2021. Yet, despite these developments, nothing substantial has materialized. External factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic halting production and the 2023 strikes have only added to the challenges faced in bringing Cloverfield back to life.
As the years go by since the release of “The Cloverfield Paradox,” it seems increasingly doubtful that we’ll see another installment of the Cloverfield series in cinemas. However, given the unpredictable nature of this franchise, anything is possible. Fans were taken aback when they learned that “10 Cloverfield Lane” was linked to the Cloverfield universe and had no idea what Cloverfield was before its marketing campaigns kicked off. If any series can make a comeback, it’s this one!
The upcoming J.J. Abrams movie, produced at Warner Bros., featuring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, is an exciting prospect on the horizon. If this film resonates with the current cultural trends, it could potentially rekindle enthusiasm for Bad Robot’s diverse portfolio, including the Cloverfield series. Moreover, should the Cloverfield franchise be revived, The Cloverfield Paradox offers a valuable guide on what to steer clear of to maintain the freshness of this anthology film series. To achieve this, it is advisable to avoid linking individual Cloverfield installments and instead concentrate on the standalone thrills that made both Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane so captivating. Emphasizing these aspects would indeed provide a valid reason for reviving what is currently a hibernating kaiju-focused franchise.
The Cloverfield Paradox is now streaming on Netflix.
