As a die-hard DC Universe fan with years of comic book lore under my belt, I must say that the upcoming live-action adaptations of the Creature Commandos are nothing short of exhilarating! The idea of an interconnected universe tying animation, television, and movies together is revolutionary, and it’s even more exciting to see actors like Frank Grillo jumping between these different mediums.
The cast of the animated series “Creature Commandos” is buzzing with excitement about their potential roles in the live-action versions within the new DC Universe. During the unveiling of the 10-project slate by DC Studios co-chairs and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran in January 2023, it was revealed that actors from the adult animated series “Creature Commandos” (premiering Dec. 5 on Max) would also portray their characters in live-action. This includes Frank Grillo, who currently voices Rick Flag Sr. in “Creature Commandos” and is set to transition to live-action roles in Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film and “Peacemaker” season 2, scheduled for later in 2025.
Gunn clarified that with DCU, we’ll see animation seamlessly blended with live-action. This means that TV shows, movies, and games will all share the same universe. We’ll choose actors who can portray characters in projects like Creature Commandos, but also in other upcoming roles within this universe, some of which we’ve already cast.

In this new seven-episode series, written and overseen by Gunn, we follow an unusual group of monstrous criminals who are hired for perilous assignments that are considered too risky for humans. The team is assembled after the authorities disband Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) Task Force X, also known as the Suicide Squad.
Apart from Rick Flag Sr. (portrayed by Grillo), Economos (played by Steve Agee from Peacemaker), Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), the team also consists of Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Indira Varma as The Bride, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, and Sean Gunn as both Weasel and GI Robot. This group includes an assortment of unusual creatures.
With Grillo being the first actor set to star in all three components of the freshly linked universe – an animated show (“Creature Commandos”), a movie (“Superman”), and a live-action series (“Peacemaker” 2) – ComicBook has posed the question to the cast about which “Creature Commandos” characters they’d like to witness in real life.

Grillo stated, “David Harbour, specifically Frankenstein.” He expressed this because of his immense admiration for David Harbour. He finds the entire cast exceptional, but there’s a unique appeal to Harbour in his roles. According to him, Harbour brings a certain depth and gravitas to such characters, making them all the more captivating. Grillo further shared his desire to see Harbour play Frankenstein in a live-action setting. He finds Harbour both hilarious and heart-breaking, and believes that the soulful portrayal of Frankenstein would suit him perfectly.
Characters Chao and Gunn refer to their teammate, referred to as The Bride, who joins Unit Task Force M, a group whose name “M” stands for “monster”. This unit also includes the artificial creation known as Frankenstein.
Gunn believes she’s an incredibly appealing character, Indira certainly excels. Both of them, including Frankenstein’s character, are fascinating, he added. We already know that Rick Flag senior will be appearing in the second season of Peacemaker, making it even more exciting.
Could Arnold Schwarzenegger potentially lend his voice to a video game, given the extensive mythological elements in Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters as referred to by Gunn and Safran? “If they’re willing to pay,” Schwarzenegger quipped. “It’s fascinating because I don’t understand how they manage it, James and Peter. Yet, they seem to have a deep comprehension and control over the universe they’re constructing, be it animation or live-action. They’re hands-on in every aspect of it, and they work with talented individuals. So, nothing would shock me when it comes to these two.
Grillo expressed how remarkable it’s been for him to portray the same character across various formats. “Since Rick is consistently Rick in each of these ventures, I’ve essentially played him as the same individual dealing with diverse situations,” he explained. “James has supported this continuity and encouraged it, making it a precious experience for me. It offers me the chance to be playful at times and exaggerated, but also to portray authentic moments that feel real and immediate. As an actor, I’ve had the opportunity to explore a variety of complexities, and it’s been delightful.
Creature Commandos premieres Dec. 5 on Max, with one episode airing weekly until Jan. 16.
