The Crow (2024) Ending Explained

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen more than my fair share of reboots and remakes. The Crow (2024) is no exception to this trend, but it certainly stands out from the crowd with its unique twist on the original story.

2024’s “The Crow” reimagines the tale of Eric (played by Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly (FKA Twigs), two soulmates entangled in a dark, passionate romance that ultimately takes a heartbreaking turn. In an act of unspeakable violence, both Eric and Shelly are viciously killed. However, destiny intervenes as Eric’s spirit is resurrected to seek vengeance. This narrative framework echoes the original Crow comic series and its 1994 movie adaptation, but the 2024 film introduces fresh supernatural aspects that lead to an ending significantly distinct from the initial film.

How The Crow (2024) Changes The Story

The Crow (2024) Ending Explained

In the narrative I’m delving into, it’s me who’s been chosen by the enigmatic entity Kronos, portrayed by Sami Bouajila, to bear the immortal and healing powers of ‘The Crow’. This transformation takes place in a bizarrely eerie realm, reminiscent of an abandoned factory or train yard that straddles the line between life and death.

As I stand once more at the crossroads, Sami shares a heart-wrenching revelation with me – my unwavering love for Shelly earned me an extraordinary blessing: immortality. This divine gift was bestowed upon me not just to avenge our brutal murders, but also to save Shelly’s soul from the torment of damnation.

In response to Eric’s agreement being honored, he faithfully re-emerges in the mortal realm and systematically annihilates Victor Roeg’s criminal empire. During their climactic confrontation, Roeg, under the influence of his demonic powers, nearly overpowers Eric. However, Eric manages to pull Roeg into the crossroads dimension alongside him. In this realm, hordes of Hell-spawn swiftly materialize and drag Roeg into a deep abyss filled with pitch-black ink; just seconds later, Shelly emerges from that same dark void, only to have her spirit sent back to Earth shortly after reuniting with Eric for a brief instant.

In an unexpected twist, paramedics manage to resuscitate Shelly on her apartment floor, which appears to be several hours following her supposed murder. Meanwhile, Eric is found deceased beside her, but in a surprising turn of events, it’s disclosed that he didn’t descend into the dark realm as anticipated; instead, he remains entangled with the mystical crows in the crossroads dimension.

In the finale of The Crow (2024), it sets up potential future movies by implying that Eric remains an unquiet ghost, trapped between living and dying, seemingly poised for another resurgence to avenge wickedness if directed to do so.

The Crow Director Defends Its Ending

There’s been debate over whether the ending of “The Crow” may have been altered to facilitate sequels, instead of providing a conclusive ending as seen in the 1994 version where Eric and Shelly are reunited in the afterlife. On his part, director Rupert Sanders maintains that he made a self-contained film, while still leaving room for potential future installments.

According to Sanders, speaking with THR, the film seems self-contained and he prefers movies that don’t require a sequel. For him, a movie ought to conclude in a manner that wraps up the narrative nicely, and this one achieves that.

“Can it continue for a second adventure? Yes,” he admitted. Bill’s Eric is an incredible character, and by the end of the movie, he’s become something new. In a way, it’s the origin story of a character like Batman, and I think Bill’s Dark Knight could very well be around the corner,” Sanders shares. “The exciting idea of him moving between worlds and between life and death is fascinating. So there’s definitely a million versions of what that could be, but right now, my focus was on telling the story of Eric and Shelly and finishing that story in a very finite way.”

The Crow (2024) is now in theaters.
