As an avid manga enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that The Darwin Incident has truly piqued my interest. With its unique blend of ecological politics and the exploration of animal experimentation, it’s a breath of fresh air amidst the sea of predictable narratives. The fact that it’s being brought to life by the minds behind Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Neon Genesis Evangelion only adds to its allure.
In anticipation of the upcoming anime adaptation of Shun Umezawa’s “The Darwin Incident”, Bellnox Films is actively marketing their production and introducing Charlie, one of its main characters, to a wider audience. To celebrate Japan’s Monkey Day, Bellnox shared two fresh pieces of official artwork featuring Charlie alongside his human companion Lucy. As of now, no specific release date for the anime has been announced, but we do have information about the team behind its production.
2024 saw the establishment of Bellnox Films, a fresh animation studio led by Hiroyuki Omori, who’s known for producing the anime adaptation of “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure”. This new studio’s inaugural project will be “The Darwin Incident”, a series that boasts an impressive lineup. Kaokatsu Tsuda (“Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure”) and Katsuichi Nakayama (“Neon Genesis Evangelion”) will direct the series, two highly respected figures in the industry. Shinichi Inotsume (“Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure”) will handle the story composition, while character designs are under the capable hands of Shunpei Tomooka (Trinity Seven). As of now, no actors have been announced for the roles of Charlie and Lucy.
The Darwin Incident Is a Deep-Dive Into Ecological Politics
Titled “The Darwin Incident“, this extraordinary series delves deeper than typical explorations of the “what does it mean to be human” concept, often associated with such series. Instead, it expands its horizons by scrutinizing the consequences of animal experimentation, ecological activism taken to extremes, and eco-terrorist activities.
In simpler terms, Shun Umezawa’s writing style effectively conveys a deeply moving story without coming off as overly sophisticated or pretentious. Since it belongs to the seinen genre, it isn’t shy about exploring dark themes and complex ideas – a perfect fit for “The Darwin Incident”. This series has been successful both critically and commercially, with more than 1.6 million copies sold by May 2024. It has garnered numerous awards in Japan, including the Manga Taisho Award in 2022 and an Excellence Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival. Furthermore, it received recognition internationally, winning the 17th ACBD’s Prize “Asie de la Critique” in France.
