The DCU’s Frankenstein Is Nothing Like the Troubled Monster We’ve Come to Expect

As a die-hard fan who’s been following the DC Universe since its inception, I must say that Frankenstein in Creature Commandos is a breath of fresh air! After decades of seeing the misunderstood creature in various adaptations, it’s refreshing to see a version that’s not only monstrous but also downright hilarious.

As we dive into “Creature Commandos”, the inaugural production from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU, anticipation swirled around the fearsome creatures slated for the series, particularly Frankenstein. The excitement peaked when it was announced that David Harbour from “Stranger Things” would be lending his voice to the character, possibly reprising the role in live-action projects later on. With the release of the first two episodes of “Creature Commandos”, viewers have finally been introduced to Harbour’s Frankenstein and are discovering that this portrayal is far from what was anticipated.

In contrast to the original Frankenstein story where the doctor is portrayed as the true terror and his creation is misjudged by society, the character of Frankenstein in the Creature Commandos is indeed a monster, both on the outside and inside, and he also has an annoying habit of stalking others.

In the second installment of Creature Commandos, we delve into the backstory of the character known as the Bride. Originally designed to be the bride of Frankenstein, she was brought to life by her creator at his request, but she didn’t reciprocate his feelings. Instead, she fell for a man called the Doctor. This infuriated Frankenstein, leading him to murder Victor (apparently believing he was doing the Bride a favor). With Victor gone, the Bride and the Doctor could finally be together, but this turn of events did not sit well with her, and since then, she’s avoided any connection with Frankenstein for hundreds of years.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but recount my relentless pursuit of the Bride across the globe. Frankenstein has dedicated every moment of his Earthly existence to capturing her heart once more, and it’s crystal clear that no obstacle is too great for him to overcome in this quest. My life’s purpose revolves around reigniting our love, and should anyone dare to obstruct my mission, they will face the consequences.

Beyond just being a truly detestable character, Frankenstein proves to be remarkably humorous within the comic series Creature Commandos, largely due to Harbour’s outstanding portrayal. This makes him an exceptional villain for the freshly launched DCU, one that we hope will continue to entertain us for some time to come.

Prior to the premiere, egmr.ru had a chat with Dean Lorey, the showrunner of Creature Commandos. He confessed that everyone was taken aback by James Gunn’s interpretation of Frankenstein just like he was. To him, the monster is the most malevolent character in the series, yet he can’t help but be captivated by him.

Lorey shared with us that they were unsure about how David Harbour would develop this character because it’s quite enigmatic, similar to G.I. Robot in its ability to be many things. The question was how Frankenstein-esque to make it, but Harbour infused the character with such captivating charm that you almost forget his villainous nature. Indeed, he is one of the most sinister characters in the series, bordering on being a relentless stalker with the Bride.

As I went over the script again and again, I found myself questioning its authenticity – “Could this really happen?” I pondered. At times, it seemed more like a delightful rom-com was unfolding before me. But then, a sudden realization struck: “Oh, no.

Over the following five weeks, the character of Frankenstein will expand further as the series “Creature Commandos” continues to air new episodes on Max. There’s plenty more story ahead, and we can only hope that this show paves the way for an even grander adventure for these characters within the DC Universe in the future.
