As a die-hard fan who has been following the comic book universe for decades, I must say that the upcoming TV projects from DC Studios are nothing short of exhilarating! The planned two series per year is just enough to keep me engaged without overwhelming my schedule (or wallet).
Starting in December, DC Studios will kick off its extensive small-screen debut with Creature Commandoes, and we’ve learned about numerous other projects currently in development or planning. This strategy heavily involves TV, but it stands out from Marvel Studios and Marvel Television in significant ways. One of these differences was emphasized by the CEO and President of Global Streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, JB Perrette, who discussed HBO Max and its DC content plans, as well as the large amount of content scheduled to be released on the platform annually (as reported by Deadline).
As for the overall strategy, Perrette mentioned that they will be unveiling an animated series titled Creature Commandos, marking the beginning of James [Gunn]’s new DC Universe. Alongside this, we have Peacemaker in production, and we are also developing a DC Lanterns project. However, he suggested that producing two DC series per year might be sufficient, as having four or five isn’t necessarily needed.
Compared to Marvel‘s current production rate, having two series per year represents a significant difference. However, as Perrette pointed out, DC’s output is set to increase substantially, particularly next year. For instance, this month they are releasing Creature Commandoes, followed closely by Lanterns, which is actively being developed and has recently announced several of its cast members.
2025’s lineup for Marvel stands out, boasting six upcoming series: Spider-Man Neighborhood Friend, Daredevil Reborn, Ironheart, Wakanda’s Eyes, Marvel Zombies, and Wonder Man. With this many shows premiering in 2025 alone, it significantly surpasses DC’s annual plan of only two series per year.
Enthusiasts are thrilled about the upcoming film, Lanterns, given that some principal actors have been chosen. This includes Aaron Pierre playing John Stewart, who expressed his delight at being a part of the fresh DC movie universe on Instagram. “Deeply honored and immensely grateful. A dream realized,” Pierre posted. “Thank you for the affection and positive vibes. Thank you for inviting me to DC. Let’s collaborate!
Chris Mundy (known for his work on Ozark and True Detective: Night Country) is set to take charge as the showrunner for Lanterns. Alongside Chris, Damon Lindelof (recognized for Watchmen and The Leftovers), and Tom King (renowned for Wonder Woman), will co-write the series. Besides Pierre, the main cast of Lanterns includes Kyle Chandler (playing Hal Jordan), Kelly Macdonald (as Sheriff Kerry), Garret Dillahunt (in the role of William Macon), and Poorna Jagannathan (portraying Zoe).
Regardless if you lean towards DC or Marvel, television fans can expect an exciting array of diverse projects in the upcoming year. Ranging from the grittier Lanterns and Daredevil: Born Again to the darker Marvel Zombies and Creature Commandoes in animation, there’s also Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man for those who prefer lighter fare, and Wonder Man which seems to be a unique departure from the usual.
