The Decameron star talks scenes viewers will “probably never get to see”

As I delve deeper into the world of “The Decameron,” I find myself captivated by the unique blend of comedy and drama that unfolds in this Netflix production. The setting is intriguing, with a group of Italian nobles and their servants seeking refuge from the Black Plague at a lavish rural villa.

In simpler terms, “The Decameron” on Netflix is a comedy about a bunch of Italians – nobles and their servants – who escape the Black Plague in Florence by gathering at a grand country estate.

As a movie reviewer, I’d say: I was thoroughly entertained by “The Short Story Collection” from writer Kathleen Jordan, who gained recognition through Netflix’s “Teenage Bounty Hunters.” This eight-episode series is inspired by her short story collection of the same name. An intriguing aspect of this production is that the actors were given the freedom to improvise, adding a unique touch to each scene. Some of these spontaneous moments made it into the final cut, enhancing the overall narrative, while others didn’t quite fit and were left on the cutting room floor. Regardless, the improvisation brings an authenticity and freshness to the series, making for an engaging and enjoyable viewing experience.

“And if it makes the cut, it makes the cut, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

He added that the “improvisations of people brought about a lot of humor which we might unfortunately never have the chance to witness”.

He noted that there was ample space for it and the team strongly endorsed and motivated it as well.

In the show, Gill portrays Panfilo, a significant political figure from Florence with a penchant for scheming as introduced. However, as the storyline unfolds, the actor’s perspective towards this character softens, revealing a more compassionate side.

Playing a character who schemes can be enjoyable, but as the story progresses, new obstacles arise, and unexpected events keep happening. Despite his confidence in outsmarting others, he continually faces failure, which can be disconcerting.

As I watched the show unfold, each challenge that came his way only made me admire him more. Particularly during the intense and heartfelt moments between him and Neifile (Lou Gala), I found myself moved by the genuine connection they shared. The script beautifully portrayed some deeply touching scenes for both of them, allowing him to grow and learn in meaningful ways.

According to Gill, although Panfilo and Neifile’s relationship may seem unusual to some, it will resonate with certain viewers. He commended Jordan’s ability to portray the authentic human connection between them amidst the production’s more extraordinary aspects.

In some relationships, an essential part has lost its significance or even ended, leaving an uncomfortable silence between the parties, according to Gill.

Instead of avoiding the issue and continuing with the comforts of our strong friendship, we could bravely confront any difficulties that come our way. Although it may be daunting, facing challenges together can ultimately strengthen our bond.

Based on my own personal experience of watching the show, I initially found myself thinking that she came across as quite demanding and more effort than he was putting in for her. However, as the story progressed, it became increasingly clear how much they brought out in each other and how deeply connected they were. The earlier episodes provided a mere glimpse into their relationship, but the later ones truly showcased their significance to one another.

starting July 25th, you can stream “The Decameron” on Netflix; the subscription starts at just £4.99 per month. Additionally, Netflix can be accessed on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.
