The Diplomat boss drops season 3 spoiler hints after massive cliffhanger

As a long-time fan of political dramas and someone who has watched their fair share of White House intrigue, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming third season of The Diplomat. The cliffhanger at the end of season 2 was nothing short of jaw-dropping, leaving me on the edge of my seat wanting more.

Warning – contains full spoilers for all six episodes of The Diplomat season 2.

Fans are certainly grateful today, as The Diplomat has already been given a green light for a third season. This comes as a relief after the mind-blowing twist at the end of season 2.

Beginning today, all new episodes for season 2 can be accessed. The final episode concludes with Rufus Sewell’s character, Hal, making a call to the president to reveal that his vice president, Grace Penn (portrayed by Allison Janney), secretly gave an order for a military strike on a British warship. This move was part of a calculated plan, but unintentionally resulted in many casualties.

Meanwhile, Keri Russell’s character, Kate, ultimately revealed her genuine desire for the position she held, expressing her belief that Grace was not suitable for it.

As a cinephile immersed in the intrigue of political dramas, I can’t help but reflect on the heart-wrenching instance when Hal’s call struck such a profound chord of distress within our president that it led to his untimely demise, instantly thrusting Grace into the role of commander in chief.

It’s yet unclear how everything will unfold in season 3, but the showrunner, Debora Cahn, has provided some clues about the series’ future trajectory during a recent chat with Deadline.

Initially, Cahn suggested that, similar to how season 2 ended, season 3 might continue right away following the final episode, in those immediate post-finale moments.

Regarding possible leaps in time, she mentioned: “I prefer keeping an open mind about the possibility that one day we might leapfrog a year or two, however, I usually want to join the narrative only half a minute later than where we last left off.

Previously, I haven’t tackled storytelling in this specific manner. Yet, I feel that part of my motivation stems from recognizing that viewers often engage with content over an extended duration.

They tend to watch multiple consecutive episodes at a time, aiming to keep it engaging and flowing like a continuous narrative. It’s as if they’re watching one extended movie. Once accustomed to this pattern, writing in this manner becomes enjoyable.

When asked about how the end of the season affects Kate’s aspirations for the vice presidency, Cahn playfully replied “well, you’re in for Season 3 now”, suggesting that this question will be a central focus moving forward in the series narrative.

Regarding if Kate and Hal’s relationship will hold up after he chose to contact the president instead of the Secretary of State, as originally planned, Cahn expressed uncertainty: “Could their partnership withstand such circumstances? I’m not sure.

Additionally, Cahn discussed an interesting aspect – during this season, a woman could assume the role of Vice President at the White House. This scenario might come to life if Kamala Harris triumphs in the U.S. election in November.

When queried about her thoughts regarding the season under those conditions, Cahn remarked: “To be honest, there were certainly some thrilling aspects to it. Since I’m crafting a story of dreams coming true, it’s quite intriguing that these same elements could potentially manifest in reality too.

We find her character exceptional, and her acting skills are top-notch. Our aim is to develop a scenario that’s dense and messy in the best sense, tailored specifically for this character.

However, discussing something current can be quite daunting. We aim to avoid a situation where we seem outdated or disheartened by our words.

She stated: “We don’t aim to offer direct opinions on current politics, but rather, we strive to participate in discussions that matter most to people right now. It can be nerve-wracking to ensure we stay aligned with the prevailing cultural and political climate as events unfold daily.
