As a seasoned gamer and long-time admirer of Atlus’ masterful storytelling, I can unequivocally state that Metaphor: ReFantazio has more than earned its stripes for a sequel, and I wholeheartedly concur with Katsura Hashino’s hopeful sentiment. Having played countless JRPGs over the years, from the classics to modern marvels, I can confidently assert that Metaphor: ReFantazio has etched itself among the greatest of them all.
On December 25th, 2024, I chanced upon an intriguing interview with Katsura Hashino, the mastermind behind Atlus’ latest JRPG sensation, Metaphor: ReFantazio, as published by Japan’s revered Weekly Famitsu magazine (translated by PersonaCentral). In this conversation, Hashino shared that, at present, there are no definitive plans for a sequel. However, he expresses his heartfelt wish that the captivating Metaphor: ReFantazio will inspire one in the future.
He mentions that he has an idea to make Metaphor: ReFantazio’s sequel take place in a Sengoku period but he jokingly realizes that going in that direction would turn the game into something similar to the Basara franchise.
Beyond just considering a follow-up, Katsura Hashino aims to establish Metaphor: ReFantazio as an enduring franchise, potentially joining Atlus’ trio of renowned JRPG series, which currently includes Persona and Shin Megami Tensei.
Metaphor: ReFantazio’s imaginative world deserves to be explored further
Speaking enthusiastically as a devoted admirer of Atlus JRPGs since long ago, I have no hesitation to declare that ReFantazio Metaphor deserves undoubtedly to spawn a sequel. In the year 2024, it stood out among my top Xbox games and PC games due to its captivating world that begged for more exploration. The gameplay combining combat and exploration was an exceptional fusion of Atlus’ past works, boasting endearing and memorable characters, breathtakingly unique monster designs, a treasure trove of inventive lore, and a plot so gripping it earned the title “Best Story Direction” in the Windows Central Game Awards 2024.
It wasn’t just me who appreciated Metaphor: ReFantazio; even Zachary Boddy, my colleague, gave it a sparkling 4.5/5 review without having any prior experience with Atlus JRPGs. In under a day of its release on October 11, 2024, the game surpassed one million copies sold and set a new record as Atlus’ fastest-selling title to date, surpassing the success of Persona 3: Reload which was launched earlier this year.
2024 turned out to be a stellar year for Atlus, and I’m eagerly anticipating what they have planned next. Whether it’s the long-awaited sequel for Metaphor: ReFantazio, the official announcement of Persona 6, or a completely new intellectual property, I’m excited about what the future holds for them!
