In their forthcoming projects, Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods, FromSoftware is dabbling in multiplayer mechanics. According to ex-PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, these games pose a distinct test for the studio.
In a recent podcast conversation with Easy Allies, Yoshida mentioned that since director Hidetaka Miyazaki generally prefers non-Player versus Player (PvP) gaming experiences, developing The Duskbloods poses a unique challenge for the studio. He further speculated that due to Miyazaki’s perspective on PvP, The Duskbloods may be designed as a more appealing game for players who tend to avoid titles focused on PvP.
According to Yoshida, FromSoftware is facing a fresh hurdle – crafting a multiplayer game. Given that Miyazaki-san isn’t particularly fond of player-versus-player (PvP) games, FromSoftware intends to make the experience more inviting for those who might feel daunted by PvP gaming.
Yoshida mentions that he doesn’t typically excel at multiplayer games, such as shooters. However, a game like “The Duskbloods” appeals to him because its PvPvE gameplay might be designed to accommodate players who find it challenging to compete with others.
Yoshida stated, “I’m not particularly skilled at FPS games either, so I don’t compete in them. However, since [The Duskbloods] are designed by FromSoftware with a style that suits players like myself, I’m really looking forward to it.
I was super excited when The Duskbloods was revealed during Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct this month! It looks like it’ll be an action-packed, multiplayer game where we, as players, can choose our characters based on their unique abilities and dive into the world to face off against AI opponents, and possibly other gamers too. Each match can have up to 8 of us battling it out simultaneously!
In the reveal trailer, several playable characters were displayed, each boasting unique skills and specialized equipment. Certain characters even have enhanced mobility features, like the one seen gliding with a jetpack in the video. The game launches with over a dozen of these playable characters initially.
In previous discussions, Miyazaki has mentioned that each character in the game offers an opportunity for players to assume a specific role during gameplay.
Miyazaki explained that during online play, specific roles provide players with unique tasks and goals which can result in diverse player interactions and connections based on these roles. This could be somewhat personal to me, and it might initially seem unusual, but I encourage players to experiment with it.
An early-month trademark disclosure unveiled that FromSoftware holds the rights for The Duskbloods, implying they’ll have autonomous authority over the game’s future direction – a contrast to titles like Bloodborne where control is shared. This exclusive ownership shields FromSoftware from complications similar to Bayonetta’s, where sequels are confined to Nintendo systems instead of enjoying a broader audience through multiplatform distribution. There’s also speculation that The Duskbloods may eventually expand to various gaming platforms in the future.
The game titled “The Duskbloods” is being created specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2 and is expected to release in the year 2026.
