The Elusive Samurai Has the Best Anime Premiere of the Summer So Far

As a longtime anime fan and avid follower of the Summer 2024 season, I’ve seen my fair share of new releases that promise exciting action, captivating stories, and unique characters. But none have left me as utterly surprised and impressed as “The Elusive Samurai.”

The Summer 2024 anime lineup is gaining momentum, but “The Elusive Samurai” has stolen the spotlight with its captivating opening episodes. With numerous new and returning anime series to look forward to this season, it’s easy to get lost in the excitement. However, one under-the-radar show has managed to make a strong impact upon its debut. Fittingly, considering the series revolves around a young protagonist who excels in stealth and concealment rather than confrontation in combat.

The Elusive Samurai might be making the jump from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and might be from the creator behind Assassination Classroom, but it wasn’t exactly high on anyone’s radar. That was until the premiere of the first episode showcased a much more brutal presentation than its initial aesthetic seemed to tease, and the second episode took it to even further heights to demonstrate the kinds of action we’ll get to see as the series continues.

What Is The Elusive Samurai?

Created by Yusei Matsui for Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2021, “The Elusive Samurai” has been a relatively understated success with over 160 chapters. Though it has its devoted fans, it hasn’t garnered the same level of excitement or clamor for an anime adaptation that series like “Sakamoto Days,” “Undead Unluck,” and “Jujutsu Kaisen” have. However, this is expected to shift once the anime premieres this summer.

In this anime, we are introduced to Tokiyuki Hojo, who is next in line to lead a Japanese feudal town as the heir of the Hojo clan. However, things aren’t quite right within the clan from the start. Tokiyuki’s father seems to be under someone else’s control, and Tokiyuki himself shows no enthusiasm for martial arts or wielding a sword. Instead, he prefers playing childish games like tag and hide-and-seek, and excels at them. But then, unexpectedly, the Hojo clan is betrayed by Ashikaga Takauji, one of their most trusted warriors.

When Tokiyuki’s family is tragically slaughtered, he encounters an enigmatic shaman named Yorishige Suwa who predicts that Tokiyuki will one day be the renowned warrior of their era. Forced into hiding, Tokiyuki eventually challenges and overthrows his clan using his unique abilities. This unexpected tale doesn’t just captivate audiences with its plot twists but elevates the experience with its compelling delivery.

Director Yuta Yamazaki and the team at CloverWorks (responsible for “My Dress-Up Darling,” “Spy x Family,” and “Bocchi the Rock”) have elevated the deceptive elements and intriguing characters introduced in “The Elusive Samurai” manga. Their efforts, as displayed in the episodes released so far, have resulted in a captivating mix of plot and action that makes this anime a standout of the Summer 2024 season. You can currently stream it on Crunchyroll.
