Among the highlights from the Summer of Gaming showcase series, Owlcat Games’ The Expanse: Osiris Reborn was particularly noteworthy. Built using Unreal Engine 5, this third-person shooter/role-playing game has a strong resemblance to the Mass Effect series.
Although it may appear sudden, “Osiris Reborn” is actually a project that’s been under development for quite some time. According to Creative Director Alexander Mishulin, work on this project kicked off in 2021, and the team spent nearly a year creating prototypes.
Our project kick-started in 2021. For nearly a year, we’ve been experimenting with different prototypes, as this game was unlike anything we had worked on before. This led us to develop new methods, new strategies, and ensure that all aspects were functioning smoothly, particularly the shooting segments. Once everything was running smoothly, we began creating our vertical slices, and now we are fully immersed in production.
As a devoted admirer, it’s no secret that Owlcat Games has consistently delivered on their passion for Computer Role-Playing Games (CRPGs). Even their upcoming project, “Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy”, falls under the same category, being their second venture in the Warhammer 40K universe following “Rogue Trader”. Yet, Mishuli shares an intriguing tidbit – the team has always harbored a desire to branch out and create a third-person title with “Osiris Reborn”.
Starting off, our focus was on creating a third-person game experience, as ‘The Expanse’ is primarily about its characters. Our aim is to enhance your engagement with the protagonists and their companions, and we want you to become fully absorbed in this authentic, science fiction environment that feels so real.
To illustrate our concept effectively, we decided to switch to a third-person perspective, making it more relatable and cinematic. This change was initially nerve-wracking, but necessary. We then began designing various combat and exploration zones as prototypes. Throughout this process, we tried out multiple methods for implementing our cover system and enemy behavior, tailoring them to suit our vision.
In crafting the combat arenas specifically, the developer created six prototypes to ensure a solid foundation for battle mechanics. For fans of their earlier works, Osiris Reborn continues the same Owlcat experience by offering multiple character customization options and making choices with tangible impacts. The game is set in the universe of The Expanse, where politics and intrigue unfold much like they did in previous titles. However, the narrative approach has been enhanced, with dialogue becoming more cinematic and fitting for the chosen genre.
The game ‘The Expanse: Osiris Reborn’ is currently being developed for release on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC priced at $49.99. Purchasing the Miller’s Pack for $79.99 grants early access to the beta version of the game.
