As a lifelong Marvel fan who has been following the Fantastic Four since their early days, I am beyond excited for the upcoming film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The San Diego Comic-Con sneak peeks have only fueled my anticipation even more.

Discussing “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has become a hot topic among Marvel enthusiasts, following the captivating sneak peeks shown at San Diego Comic-Con. With filming for the Marvel Studios production starting this week, curiosity about the unique movie is only intensifying. The position of “The Fantastic Four” within the vast Marvel Cinematic Universe multiverse and the destiny of the film’s expanding cast of characters will undoubtedly keep fans guessing until its summer 2025 release.

In that initial dialogue, it would be ideal to keep the character Alicia Masters available for future Marvel Cinematic Universe stories.

Who Is Alicia Masters?

Originating from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s 1962 “Fantastic Four” comic #8, Alicia Masters is a visually impaired woman who shares a family connection with the villain known as the Puppet Master. Despite not being able to see Ben Grimm in his rock form, she develops an affection for him due to his kind nature, which leads her to turn against her father and support the Fantastic Four. Over time, Alicia becomes Ben’s love interest and a regular ally of the team, playing a crucial part in the Silver Surfer’s decision to oppose Galactus.

Following Ben’s departure from the team, it seems that Alicia develops feelings for and marries Johnny Storm, also known as Human Torch. However, she is later revealed to be a Skrull in disguise the whole time, with the real Alicia still harboring affection for Ben. Despite this revelation, Alicia remains connected to the Fantastic Four and the broader Marvel Universe heroes.

Why Alicia Masters Should Be Saved for The Fantastic Four 2.

In the development of the movie “Fantastic Four,” speculation has arisen about the possibility of Alicia appearing in the film. Some fans have suggested that Natasha Lyonne, who is part of the project with an undisclosed role, could potentially portray Alicia. However, this theory mainly stems from their shared red hair rather than similarities in Alicia’s reserved persona as depicted in the comics. It is possible that Alicia may secretly be a character in Fantastic Four, given that the film isn’t a traditional origin story and might already have established Ben (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Alicia’s relationship. On the other hand, there are arguments against including Alicia Masters in Fantastic Four altogether and saving her for a potential sequel instead.

It’s clear that “The Fantastic Four” is situated in an alternate universe from the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe during the 1960s, boasting a blend of retro-futuristic style and unique dynamics. The cosmic entity Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, is anticipated to be instrumental in the storyline. With “Avengers: Secret Wars” scheduled for 2027 and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige suggesting that the Fantastic Four will appear in it, there’s been plenty of discussion about how these movies might intertwine. It’s not impossible that “The Fantastic Four” could conclude with Galactus destroying their world, forcing them to migrate to Earth-616. This narrative choice would likely result in most of the film’s side characters being left behind in a decaying universe – even Alicia, if she were introduced in the movie.

In future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) appearances, Ben might find a poignant emotional connection through Alicia’s demise. However, this could also signal an end to their relationship at a time when viewers are starting to appreciate them together. This storyline decision isn’t novel in superhero media; for instance, Wonder Woman left Etta Candy and Steve Trevor stranded in the 1940s, resorting to questionable methods to bring Steve back in the sequel. Given the MCU’s past difficulties in developing significant romances and enriching human side characters, The Fantastic Four offers a promising chance to rectify these issues, rather than ending Ben’s romance prematurely in just the first film.

The initial release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has been planned for a theater-only premiere on July 25, 2025.
