As a lifelong pottery enthusiast who has spent countless hours at the wheel, I must say that The Festive Pottery Throw Down 2024 was a delightful treat for my Boxing Day viewing! Watching four celebrities struggle with the “hand building” technique was both entertaining and nostalgic.
As a die-hard movie buff, I eagerly tuned into the 2024 edition of The Festive Pottery Throw Down, and let me tell you, it was a visual treat that graced my Boxing Day television screen!
Four celebrities went to the Stoke-on-Trent workshop to compete in a thrilling competition.
Babatunde Aleshe, Tom Rosenthal, Rachel Riley, and Martin Kemp teamed up with specialists Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller to tackle a series of thrilling activities.
And Siobhan McSweeney oversaw proceedings on hosting duties.
In the initial assignment, the famous personalities were asked to create a Winter Wonderland scene using the “hand-building” method, implying that they shaped their masterpieces directly on a spinning pottery wheel.
As a seasoned film critic, I must confess that it’s clear that most of us were novices when it came to this innovative art form. There were a few sculptures that raised eyebrows, if I may be so bold as to mention Tom’s creations.
The gang’s clay creations were entrusted to the whims of the pottery deities, remaining inside the kiln throughout the night.
Next up, the line-up had to make as many wine coolers as possible during just 20 minutes.
Initially, it seemed straightforward to create, but turned out to be surprisingly challenging because managing the potter’s wheel proved to be tricky.
Everybody successfully chose a pair for evaluation, yet it fell upon Keith and Rich to determine which pairs would be pressed and deposited into the ominous bin.
In simpler terms, Babatunde and Martin emerged from the situation quite satisfactorily, presenting similar items that impressed the judges.
In simpler terms, Martin emerged victorious in that particular challenge, resulting in him crafting an impressive set of three identical wine coolers.
As a cinephile, I couldn’t wait to see what the following day held at the workshop. Would the kiln be generous in its treatment of our stars before they adorned their creations with paint?
Thankfully, everyone’s came out OK, with just a couple of cracks to show.
With paining done, it was back to the kiln to see how the colours would set.
On the following day, all the contributions turned out splendidly, displaying vibrant colors and narratives.
In the end, it came down to Martin and Rachel for the victory, as Martin’s heartfelt storytelling had moved Keith deeply, while Rachel’s work excelled in mathematical precision.
In the end, Martin Kemp was named the winner of The Festive Pottery Throw Down 2024.
