Enthusiasts of the “Soulslike” action RPG genre have been feasting on a variety of top-tier games in recent years. FromSoftware’s Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, to other notable titles like Lies of P and the rebooted Lords of the Fallen, there’s been no shortage of quality gaming experiences. As we approach the end of March, another potential gem is on the horizon: The First Berserker: Khazan. Initially unveiled at The Game Awards in 2023, this Dungeon Fighter ARPG is finally set to launch on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PS5 on March 27.
A majority of reviews for The First Berserker: Khazan award it 80/100 or above, although a few critics have given scores in the 70s and 60s. Generally, most critics and creators shower the game with high compliments due to its exceptional control mechanics and refined combat system, which draws inspiration from Dark Souls, Nioh, and the parry-focused style of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Moreover, many reviewers appreciate the game’s distinctive cel-shaded aesthetic, which provides a unique touch to its Berserk-inspired dark fantasy environment.
In some less favorable reviews, issues such as average level design, unremarkable storyline, and overly challenging gameplay in the beginning are often highlighted. If you prioritize a strong narrative and memorable levels, The First Berserker: Khazan might not meet your expectations. However, if you’re willing to overlook these points, you’ll find an incredibly engaging combat system filled with visual excitement, diverse enemies, and challenging boss battles that are hard to resist.
Ever since this game was unveiled at the Xbox Partner Preview in October 2024, I’ve been eagerly anticipating its release, which is coming up later this week. Admittedly, I’m a bit disappointed to learn that the story could use some improvement, as a compelling narrative can greatly enhance the overall experience. However, my excitement remains undimmed about mastering The First Berserker’s intense, flamboyant combat and tackling its formidable bosses.
In essence, this game is anticipated to be among the top Xbox and PC titles in 2025, particularly for fans of Soulslike games. While it’s priced at $59.99, you can secure the PC version for only $46.79 through CDKeys due to a beneficial preorder offer. Additionally, the Deluxe Edition, which offers Early Access and additional cosmetics, is available for $53.29 at CDKeys, if you’d like to play early or collect some extra goodies.
