Having grown up with the original anime and manga series, this new revival feels like a nostalgic blast from the past, yet it’s also fresh and exciting in its own right.

View Urgent ForecastBack in the summer heat, “The First Slam Dunk” movie rocked theaters, and now, later this month, it’s gearing up for its Netflix debut! This fresh take on Takehiko Inoue’s timeless “Slam Dunk” manga series was a thrilling comeback from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine after all those years. The new film presents an entirely new narrative that wasn’t part of the original storyline, and it’s done so with animation styles unlike anything we’ve seen in the classic franchise before. I can hardly wait to stream it!
Initially premiering in Japan last Summer, followed by other global regions, “The First Slam Dunk” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. For those eager to stream the movie, Netflix has confirmed that it will be accessible via their service starting August 25th. So, fans won’t have to wait much longer to enjoy the new film. What Is The First Slam Dunk?
Takehiko Inoue, the original author of the “Slam Dunk” manga, pens and directs “The First Slam Dunk,” produced by Toei Animation and DandeLion Animation. GKIDS starts to hint at this as, “Ryota Miyagi, the swift and clever point guard for Shohoku, outsmarts his opponents with quick wit and lightning pace while maintaining a cool demeanor. Ryota hails from Okinawa and has an older brother.”
The narrative proceeds by detailing how, much like his older brother who was a well-known basketball prodigy, Ryota too developed an obsession with basketball. In his sophomore year of high school, Ryota joins the Shohoku High School basketball team, alongside Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui. They are now poised to confront Sannoh Kogyo High School, the current champions, in the Inter-High School National Championship.
In this film’s English version, you’ll find Paul Castro Jr., playing the role of Ryota Miyagi; Jonah Scott as Hisashi Mitsui; Aleks Le taking on Kaede Rukawa; Ben Balmaceda portraying Hanamichi Sakuragi; Aaron Goodson for Takenori Akagi; Zeno Robinson for Kiminobu Kogure; Kelsey Jaffer for Ayako; Mike Pollock as Mitsuyoshi Anzai; Adam McArthur for Sota Miyagi; and Alicyn Packard for Kaoru Miyagi.
