Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character Julie James from the movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” produced by Sony Pictures, asks: “What did you do the previous summer?” The first trailer for this year’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was released on Tuesday, reviving the horror series for a new audience. Years have passed since Julie, Ray Bronson (played by Freddie Prinze Jr.), Barry (Ryan Philippe), and Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) were involved in a lethal hit-and-run accident in the 1997 original film. However, they find themselves reunited when a new Fisherman, armed with a hook, begins terrorizing the town of Southport once more.

As a fan, I can’t help but express my excitement for the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” from 2022. Much like how the 2018 “Halloween”, 2022’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, and this year’s “Scream” have done, it is a sequel set decades later, featuring original stars reprising their roles alongside a talented new cast. The fresh faces for this chilling tale include Chase Sui Wonders from “The Studio”, Madelyn Cline of “Outer Banks”, Sarah Pidgeon from “The Wilds”, Jonah Hauer-King known for his role in “The Little Mermaid”, and Tyriq Withers who starred in “Him”. I can hardly wait to see what this ensemble brings to the table!
Title Concept: “Five companions unintentionally trigger a fatal car crash, choosing to conceal their role and evade punishment. A year down the line, their hidden secret resurfaces, leading them to grapple with a chilling reality: someone from their past is seeking retribution for their actions the previous summer…and appears determined to exact revenge. As one by one they’re targeted by a vengeful stalker, they uncover that this pattern of events mirrors a historical tragedy – the Southport Massacre of 1997 – and seek guidance from the sole survivors.
Previously, Hewitt and Prinze teamed up for the 1998 film “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” A third installment (the direct-to-video release of “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer”) was released in 2005. In 2021, Amazon Prime Video transformed Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel into an eight-episode television series.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who has written and directed movies like “Do Revenge” and co-written “Thor: Love and Thunder”, serves as the director for a screenplay she penned alongside Sam Lansky. The story’s foundation was developed by Robinson in collaboration with Leah McKendrick, known for her work on “Scrambled”.
In an interview for the Scale Talk Podcast, Robinson “meticulously crafted the characters of Love, Julie James, and Ray Bronson.” However, it’s important to note that these characters are not the main leads in the film.
[Robinson] propelled the other cast members forward so forcefully, it wasn’t like ‘Here’s the Ray and Julie movie we should have.’ That statement doesn’t quite add up,” Prinze clarified. “Since [the original character] has passed away, it needs to be a new generation. The way she skillfully intertwines us with them is exquisitely done. The script is exceptionally well-written.
Neal H. Moritz, who’s known for his work on films like the original two “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movies, the “Fast & Furious” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” series, is also involved in the upcoming revival. The new installment of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” will hit theaters on July 18.
