The Franchise star says Sam Mendes incorporated James Bond “madness” into show

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt and countless hours spent dissecting the behind-the-scenes madness of blockbuster productions, I find myself intrigued by The Franchise. Himesh Patel’s portrayal of a first assistant director in this series that spoofs the chaotic world of filmmaking is right up my alley.

In a recent interview, actor Himesh Patel from “The Franchise” shared insights on how director Sam Mendes, with his background in James Bond movies, infused humor into the sitcom that satirizes the turbulent making of big-budget productions.

Yesterday, Tenet’s star, Patel, played the role of Daniel Kumar, who was the first assistant director on a fictional superhero movie titled “Tecto: Eye of the Storm.” This film is just one piece in a universe of films that resembles Marvel’s cinematic universe.

In a different phrasing, Sam Mendes, who is known for directing Skyfall and Spectre, helmed the premiere episode of this franchise and collaborated as an executive producer with Jon Brown from Succession and Armando Iannucci from Veep in producing the series.

Although the James Bond series hasn’t produced any connected spin-off sequels like “Road to a Million,” it still represents one of the most daring ventures in the movie business. Therefore, Sam Mendes had plenty of inspiration to work with, regardless of the situation.

For two motion pictures, he put in an immense effort, resulting in two exceptionally fine films. However, managing such a project can be quite challenging, particularly for a series as massive as this one.

In one particular episode of The Franchise series, there’s a heavy emphasis on showcasing various brands, as the Bond franchise boasts a wide array of collaborative partnerships. These brands include luxury car manufacturer Aston Martin, watchmaker Omega, and beer company Heineken.

It appears that aspect of the James Bond movies served as an influence on the franchise, as Patel remembered Mendes needing to place a specific prop in a specific location during certain scenes while filming.

Since there’s a lot of talk online about who might take on the next James Bond role, we couldn’t help but wonder if Patel inquired from Mendes if he possesses the qualities needed for this legendary part.

Patel responded: “Me? As James Bond? I didn’t broach that subject, because that would be silly.”

His co-star Aya Cash (The Boys) disagreed, adding: “I think this is a great idea… I’m in.”

The Franchise premieres on Sky and NOW on Monday 21st October 2024.
