As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for dark family dramas, I eagerly anticipate the release of “The Front Room” this weekend. Having grown up watching Disney classics like Cinderella, it’s fascinating to see the evolution of Brandy Norwood from the titular character in the 1997 version of Cinderella to her role as Belinda in “The Front Room”.
This weekend, the movie titled “The Front Room” is set to hit theaters, with Max Eggers and Sam Eggers, the younger siblings of renowned director Robert Eggers (“The VVitch“, “The Lighthouse“) at the helm. In this film, Brandy Norwood (“Descendants: The Rise of Red“) takes on the role of Belinda, and Kathryn Hunter (“Poor Things“) portrays Solange. The plot revolves around Belinda, a new mother who struggles with her mother-in-law, played by Hunter, who is not exactly amicable. Previously, ComicBook interviewed the Eggers Brothers about casting Norwood and Hunter, and they likened Belinda to Cinderella. Interestingly, Norwood had previously played the title character in Disney’s 1997 version of “Cinderella“. During our conversation with Norwood, we discussed the parallels between her character and Cinderella
“Norwood chuckled when I brought up the Cinderella analogy,” she said. “She didn’t end up with the prince in The Front Room, she didn’t have a fairy tale ending. But she was tirelessly working for Solange, taking care of her and trying to salvage her family, her marriage, fighting tooth and nail in every scene, seeking her dignity, her integrity.”
She commented, “That experience was akin to a journey for her.” The grip and the orchestration of her life were beyond comprehension. In that aspect, she bore a striking resemblance to Cinderella. Yet, unlike Cinderella, there was no fairytale ending with a prince

What Is The Front Room About?
In this movie titled “The Front Room”, newly pregnant Belinda (Brandy) finds her life turned upside down when her mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter) moves in. As the troublesome houseguest schemes to claim custody of the baby, Belinda realizes she must establish some boundaries… The film features Andrew Burnap and Neal Huff as well
The Eggers brothers also talked to ComicBook about casting Brandy in the role of Belinda.
As a dedicated gamer, I found it amusing. We were on the hunt for our wicked stepmother, only to stumble upon her, but what we truly yearned for was none other than Cinderella herself. Don’t get me wrong, Brandy is a scream queen, and her role in “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” left an indelible mark on my mind. But when it comes to Cinderella, being theater enthusiasts with countless performances under our belts, we needed someone who could captivate us from the get-go
“As for our story, it brings Brandy to mind for me. Her readiness to face such difficulties, which were quite challenging, is remarkable. Unlike Brandy, finding someone else who was willing to experience that level of stretching wasn’t quite the same situation, but Solange represents that search for such a person. And when we finally got to work with Brandy, she truly shone brightly for us.”
Sam mentioned, “She was incredibly dedicated to the character she portrayed.” He also believed that it was crucial for Brandy, similar to Kathryn and Solange’s unpredictable antics, to have a strong foundation in Belinda. This dedication was evident as she appeared in every scene, and she was ready to take on any challenge we presented her with. As an actor, you can’t ask for more than that
The Front Room hits theaters on September 6th.
