Carrie Coon’s period piece unfolds against the backdrop of the turbulent Gilded Age in America, depicting the conflict between New York City’s established and emerging wealthy classes during a time of significant economic and social transformation.

On Thursday, 21st December, it was officially confirmed that the show would continue for another season, a mere five days following the climactic end of season 2. This final episode broke records for the highest viewership, as reported by HBO.

Francesca Orsa, who heads up HBO’s drama series and films, expressed great pride in the accomplishments of Julian Fellowes and the team behind ‘The Gilded Age’,” is a natural and easy-to-read paraphrase of the original statement.

By August 2024, HBO announced that the third season would be airing some time in 2025. Right now, they’re busy with the production process.

In May 2022, HBO executive Francesca Orsi suggested that there might be plans for a third season.

I shared with Deadline that the network was evaluating the viewership for various shows, among them Perry Mason and Winning Time, both of which unfortunately didn’t continue beyond their second seasons, as well as The Gilded Age.

“At this point, we are having conversations regarding viewership relative to budget,” she said.

In simpler terms, she explained that every program has specific responsibilities based on its cost, audience appeal, critical reception, and overall hype. These factors are crucial when deciding if a show should carry on.

It’s likely we’d see Carrie Coon’s Bertha return alongside the rest of the Russell clan:

  • Morgan Spector as George Russell
  • Taissa Farmiga as Miss Gladys Russell
  • Harry Richardson as Larry Russell

We might also expect the following actors to reprise their roles:

  • Kelly Curran as Enid Winterton
  • Dakin Matthews as Joshua Winterton
  • Denée Benton as Peggy Scott
  • Cynthia Nixon as Mrs Ada Brook
  • Blake Ritson as Oscar van Rhijn
  • David Furr as Dashiell Montgomery
  • Matilda Lawler as Frances Montgomery
  • Ben Ahlers as Jack Treacher
  • Taylor Richardson as Bridget
  • Kelli O’Hara as Aurora Fane

In addition, multiple new cast members for season 3 have been announced.

On November 4th, as reported by Deadline, actors Dylan Baker (“The Good Wife”), Kate Baldwin (“Broadway’s Hello, Dolly!”), Michael Cumpsty (“Severance”), John Ellison Conlee (“Boardwalk Empire”), Bobby Steggert (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), and newcomer Hannah Shealy (“The Rose Tattoo”) have been added to the cast in supporting positions.

The character Baker takes on Dr. Logan, a family physician. Baldwin plays Nancy Adams Bell, the elder sister of John Adams (portrayed by Claybourne Elder). Lastly, Cumpsty’s role is Lord Mildmay, a British aristocrat who attends a dinner at Sidmouth Castle.

Simultaneously, Conlee assumes the role of the prosperous businessman Weston, Steggert takes on the part of the renowned artist John Singer Sargent, and Shealy is set to appear as Charlotte Astor – the married daughter of Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) who has just come back from a journey overseas.

The following actors – Merritt Wever from “Tiny Beautiful Things”, Bill Camp known for “Presumed Innocent”, Leslie Uggams famous for “Deadpool” and “Wolverine”, and Lisagay Hamilton recognized in “Winning Time” – have recently been added to the cast, as announced back in August.

In my perspective as a movie aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that in an upcoming film, the talented Danielle Macdonald (Wever) steps into the role of Monica O’Brien, the estranged sibling of Bertha, portrayed by Carrie Coon. Additionally, the legendary Marla Gibbs (Uggams) graces our screens as Mrs. Ernestine Brown, a cherished friend of Elizabeth Kirkland. Last but not least, the captivating LaChanze (Hamilton) embodies Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Each of these remarkable actors brings their unique charm and talent to this anticipated production.

What could happen in The Gilded Age season 3?

As the former ruling class steps down, New York’s high society is left in turmoil and needs to reorganize itself. However, those leading the charge for this new phase might discover that progress doesn’t come without its price,” suggests the official plot summary.

More simply, Baranski has subtly suggested that Agnes van Rhijn will encounter difficulties following the end of season 2.

The woman, who previously held the leadership role in her household, no longer does so as indicated by the ending of season 2. This once self-assured and high-ranking individual, accustomed to being at the top, is now noticeably different,” Baranski explained to Deadline.

“It’s fascinating to explore both downfalls from grace and power. The decline of a monarch can be just as intriguing as their rise. This dynamic often lends itself well to humor, I believe, since she must swallow her pride and accept humility.

Before the announcement of Season 3, writer Sonja Warfield expressed no concern about generating fresh concepts for additional episodes.

She told Town & Country: “There is so much in history [that would work for the show].

During our research for season two, we found some fascinating plot points that align with the character arcs. If fortune favors us with a third season, there’s even more intriguing storylines we could explore.

She added: “In season one, we had Thomas Edison’s lights, in season two we have the Tuskegee Institute, and we’ll discover what that is in season three.”
