The Grand Tour bids farewell in emotional trailer for final special

As a lifelong enthusiast of all things automotive and a dedicated follower of The Grand Tour, I must say that the release of their final episode, One For The Road, has me both excited and emotional. Having grown up with Top Gear and then transitioning to The Grand Tour, it’s like saying goodbye to old friends who have been on countless adventures with me over the years.

The Grand Tour’s last ever episode, One For The Road, has dropped an emotional trailer ahead of its release on Prime Video later this month.

This extended episode concludes a remarkable partnership spanning over two decades among Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond, who initially teamed up at the BBC’s Top Gear program and later moved to Amazon Prime Video’s equivalent show.

Their last outing takes them to Zimbabwe, where they will complete “a stunning road trip through beautiful and sometimes challenging landscapes leading to an emotional ending on a strangely familiar island”.

Check out the trailer for the special below, which drops on Prime Video on Friday 13th September:

In this revised version, the group consisting of Clarkson, Hammond, and May will travel across the nation using a Lancia Montecarlo, a Ford Capri 3-liter, and a Triumph Stag. This setup mirrors their adventure from the 2007 Top Gear special in Botswana.

Clarkson elaborated on the central idea behind the initial Botswana movie: “Why is it that, upon leaving London and settling in Surrey, one invariably purchases a 4×4? It’s unnecessary.”

“To prove this, we decided to drive three perfectly ordinary cars across Botswana.”

He went on to say: “Cars appear stronger than one might initially assume. They’re built to withstand a great deal of damage; it often surprises people just how much their vehicle can endure before it eventually gives out.”

As a cinephile, I found myself in an unusual predicament while reviewing this film: the trio of characters we follow embark on a journey through Zimbabwe seemed, at first glance, to be laughably unfit for adventure. However, as the story unfolds, you’ll find that they manage to not only survive but thrive. The allure of this production lies in its focus on the cars that the filmmakers adore, a delightful twist that adds an extra layer of appeal for automobile enthusiasts like myself.

As a dedicated fan of The Grand Tour, I can confirm that Hammond himself has hinted at the series continuing with new hosts, but he’s keeping tight-lipped about who might step behind the wheel or what fresh twists they could bring to the show.
