The Grand Tour hosts wanted to stop before they ‘destroyed’ show, says James May

As a long-time fan of The Grand Tour and Top Gear, I must admit that the recent news of its end has left me feeling a bit like I’ve lost an old friend. Over the years, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have taken us on countless adventures, filling our lives with laughter, excitement, and a shared passion for all things automotive.

Earlier this year, the motoring series by Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond called The Grand Tour concluded, marking the finish of their adventure that began with Top Gear back in 2003.

In a recent conversation with Yahoo UK, May shared her thoughts about the series ending. She described it as a bittersweet moment, mentioning that they chose to conclude the show to prevent it from becoming damaged or diminished.

May expressed her feelings about the conclusion of the series by saying, “It’s a little melancholic, and I understand that many are feeling sad it has ended, but there was an inevitable end, and we’ve all reached a certain stage in life.

We explored the concept quite extensively, and I believe we’ve covered all aspects. So, instead of discarding it, we seem to have set it aside for future reference.

Later on, he was questioned if the reality of that phase in his life being finished had fully sunk in for him. To this, he responded affirmatively, expressing that it occasionally resurfaces in subtle reminders.

In the final episode of The Grand Tour, I mentioned items similar to my green travel bag, a piece I exclusively carried during adventures with the others.

In many aspects, we’ve had a luxurious experience, as others have taken care of planning our vacations for us. All we need to do is show up, host the events, and enjoy the thrilling experiences.

“I’ll be taking charge of arranging my vacations from now on, likely only going twice a year. However, I’ve done this for quite some time, and I’m incredibly thankful for the experience.

Previously, Clarkson shared his rationale for concluding the series, stating: “It’s an endeavor best suited for young people. Another reason is that if we were to brainstorm about what we could do next – well, we’ve been virtually everywhere. We’ve explored all practical car-related activities, and unfortunately, the world has become smaller – and that’s the sad reality.

In the past, we made journeys crossing from Iraq into eastern Turkey, then Syria, Damascus, and finally Israel. We also traveled from Crimea to Ukraine. However, those routes are no longer accessible today.

In the meantime, Hammond indicates that the program will carry on, as fresh hosts take over from the original trio.

He promised fans: “It won’t stop! The Grand Tour persists. As hosts, we are moving aside, but Prime is set to carry it forward. I’m thrilled to find my own seat and enjoy watching someone else take over. That’s fantastic!

Currently, James May is starring in a fresh series titled “James May and the Dull Man” on Quest, whereas one of his other shows, “Our Man in…” has been terminated from Prime Video’s lineup.
