Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 6!
In the sixth episode of the sixth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Commander Wharton receives additional focus, disclosing the dark secrets behind the series’ antagonist and causing concern for Serena Joy. Previously introduced in season 6 as the new High Commander in Gilead, replacing Fred Waterford, Commander Wharton had been somewhat in the shadows during the initial episodes. However, the show has now painted him as a formidable adversary, highlighting his true menace.
In the sixth episode of season 6 in The Handmaid’s Tale, June and Moira try to flee Gilead following their operation at Jezebel’s. With support from Commander Lawrence, they manage to find Nick. As Nick aids them in their escape, he eventually discovers that Commander Wharton has dropped by for a visit. This tense encounter brings about some significant revelations, showcasing just how terrifying Commander Wharton truly is, as evidenced by Nick’s reactions.
Commander Wharton Confirms He’s Not That Different From Other Gilead Commanders
He Is Just As Evil (If Not More So)
Earlier, Commander Wharton had been trying to deceive the characters from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, making them believe that he differed from other Commanders in Gilead. Unlike others, Commander Wharton didn’t frequent Jezebel’s and supported the New Bethlehem project. He also appeared to genuinely adhere to the beliefs of Gilead. This contrast made him appealing to Serena Joy, as he seemed unlike the type of man Fred Waterford was.
Yet, the mask didn’t hold for long. In Commander Wharton’s dialogue with Nick, it becomes evident that he is as threatening as the other Commanders, if not more so. Indeed, his manipulative skills are such that he successfully coerces Nick into revealing Mayday’s assault on Jezebel’s. Commander Wharton is prepared to go to great lengths to safeguard his family and Gilead, and he won’t think twice before harming those who pose a threat to him.
What Marrying Commander Wharton Means For Serena Joy
She May Be In Trouble
With Commander Wharton now set to marry Serena Joy, their impending union becomes all the more unsettling. While Serena Joy currently views Wharton as kindly, it is only a matter of time before she discovers his true self, which could be even more oppressive than Fred’s rule. There is a strong possibility that Commander Wharton may prove to be just as abusive as Fred was at the beginning of The Handmaid’s Tale.
In the later seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, Serena Joy underwent a significant transformation, but her marriage to Commander Wharton could potentially unravel this redemption. Beyond his typical antagonistic behavior, Serena Joy now has the ability to bear children, which could alter her status in Gilead and make staying in Canada safer for her. As we approach the final episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale’s last season, the future of Serena Joy’s relationship with Commander Wharton is one of the most nerve-wracking plotlines.
