The Handmaid’s Tale Finale: Did June Finally Reunite with Hannah?

Warning: This story contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale series finale.

After six seasons, The Handmaid’s Tale is coming full circle.

As a lifestyle expert looking back on the final episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu, May 26, I must say that many plotlines were neatly wrapped up and broken relationships were mended. However, what fans have eagerly anticipated for so long – June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) being definitively reunited with her daughter Hannah – didn’t quite reach the emotional climax we were all hoping for.

The narrative continues following the startling occurrences from episode nine, where we witnessed the passing of Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), June’s long-term companion Commander Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), and newlywed Commander Gabriel Wharton (Josh Charles) in a tragic plane explosion that carried other Commanders and Gilead leaders.

1. Following the destruction of Gilead’s ruling body, Massachusetts gains independence, and the Mayday movement now focuses on releasing New York City, with their ultimate goal being Hannah’s freedom.

2. As Gilead’s leaders are wiped out, Massachusetts breaks free, and the Mayday collective targets New York City for liberation, eventually setting its sights on rescuing Hannah.

3. With Gilead’s leadership collapsing, Massachusetts secures its independence, and the Mayday group now aims to emancipate New York City, ultimately intending to save Hannah.

4. After Gilead’s leadership disintegrates, Massachusetts achieves freedom, and the Mayday organization now works towards liberating New York City, with the ultimate objective of rescuing Hannah.

5. With the fall of Gilead’s leaders, Massachusetts becomes independent, and the Mayday coalition shifts its efforts to free New York City before eventually securing Hannah’s release.

“Gilead tried to fight, but they had no leaders,” June says in a voiceover.

In the latter part of the episode, Yvonne Strahovski’s character, Serena Waterford, who has lost her power and been relocated to a refugee camp with her baby, experiences a moment of self-reflection following her assistance in June’s efforts to overthrow the Commanders in the previous installment.

As Mark Tuello (played by Sam Jaeger) bids farewell, he assures the ex-Mrs. Waterford that he’ll track her down wherever she goes, hinting at their lingering attraction. Moved to tears, Serena expresses regret for her past actions to June, to which June responds with a heartfelt “I forgive you, Serena.

In another location, June meets up again with Janine (Madeline Brewer), who was seized by the Eyes during the last episode. In an unexpected display of kindness, Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Mrs. Putnam (Ever Carradine) bring a wounded Janine to June in the forest and Mrs. Putnam consents to let Janine be with her daughter, Angela—providing her with long-awaited tranquility after years of hardship.

Afterward, numerous refugee buses arrive in Boston from Alaska, and June is reunited with her daughter Holly or Nichole, whom she co-parents with the deceased Nick, as well as her own mother.

Making an unexpected comeback is Alexis Bledel, previously known for her role as Ofglen/Emily for four seasons. She reappears in the Boston setting post-Gilead, coincidentally bumping into June on a street, and shares what transpired when she went back to Gilead to resist.

She explains to June that during her seven-month tenure, her Commander had become like a friend to her. The real motivation for her return, though, was her family: her wife Sylvia and their son Oliver.

As the show reaches its conclusion, June pauses to reflect on her painful history, strolling among the charred remains of the Waterford residence, the place where she spent numerous years as a handmaid and endured much hardship.

In the last scene, instead of relying on flashbacks, viewers witness a premonition where June’s hand is seen gripping what seems like a teenager’s hand, which resembles Hannah’s, inside a room reminiscent of June’s old bedroom.

As a dedicated follower, I eagerly anticipated the long-awaited reunion between Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Hannah, as June had promised earlier, “I’m off to reunite with Hannah.” However, the heartfelt meeting never materialized on screen, only leaving us viewers with a hopeful gleam in June’s eyes, suggesting the possibility of their reunion—an ambiguous moment that invites diverse interpretations.

As long as the mystery of the reunion lingers unanswered, the story completes its loop, subtly referencing elements from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel with the same title along the way.

As June, I find myself perched once more on the familiar windowsill of the Waterford residence – a place that holds memories as vivid as the day I first stepped foot here. Just like in the earliest moments of this journey, I recite the same heartfelt monologue, encouraged by Luke’s belief and my mother’s words echoing in my ears: “My daughter Holly must know her mother is a warrior.” Writing this book about Gilead becomes more than just chronicling events; it’s a testament to my resilience.

She starts off by describing the room as having a chair, a table, a lamp, and a window with white drapes. The window’s glass is shatterproof, yet neither the furniture nor the occupant seem to be concerned about it breaking. Instead, they appear fearful of something else – perhaps a handmaid wouldn’t be able to escape if they tried.

She ends with a familiar smirk, “I am Offred,” just as the screen fades to darkness.

In this scene, June is dressed in a green overcoat resembling the uniforms of the Wives, rather than the traditional red handmaid robe which she symbolically destroyed earlier in the episode by burning it in a street bonfire. This change suggests not only that June has survived Gilead, but also that she now wields all the power.

Jaeger, portraying character Mark Tuello, shared with People prior to the final episode that they aim to treat fans this year as they’ve been through a lot. Given the intense and gripping nature of the season, he believes it merits a satisfying conclusion.

In conversation with Variety, executive producer Yahlin Chang expressed that the last season is designed to be a season of wishes coming true. It’s a time for us to deliver something truly rewarding and satisfying.
