In the recent episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, it was revealed that Jezebel’s would close down following Nick exposing Mayday’s rescue attempt for personal gain. However, it wasn’t made clear in that episode that the women who were compelled to work there would meet their end as well.
In a covert operation, the opposition intended to assassinate multiple commanders when their attention was diverted, followed by an attack on a brothel. Subsequently, the armed forces would move in to conclude any remaining matters.
Initially, episode 7 began by showing heavily armed individuals invading the women’s changing area, capturing them, and ruthlessly killing every woman present. However, there was one exception – Janine, who miraculously survived.
She pleaded, “There’s no need for you to do it,” as she saw them about to open fire. For a moment, it seemed like they had heeded her words.
“Wait,” said one of the guards. “Not her.”
Subsequently, she was forcibly separated from her companions, the combined cries of them echoing through the atmosphere, as the surviving females were swiftly and systematically butchered, much like livestock.
That instant was incredibly intense and brutal, which might fuel the anger of the series’ critics, who have frequently argued that The Handmaid’s Tale tends to cross the line with its graphic portrayals.
Was it truly necessary for us to see that event unfold, or would the sound of gunshots through a shut door have provided enough information instead?
Let the debate commence.
But Janine, while spared, had not been saved.

During a chat between Aunt Lydia (who mistakenly believed she was deceased) and a freshly introduced Aunt (portrayed by D’Arcy Carden), it emerged that Commander Bell had secretly made Aunt Lydia his Handmaid.
And after her initial confusion, Lydia was thrilled.
“Oh, thank God!” she cried. “Oh, thank God. Thank God. Praise be. Praise be!”
However, it’s worth noting that the character we met in episode 4, Bell, is not someone you would want as a sanctuary due to his unpleasant nature.
Whenever I ventured into Jezebel’s, I would find him asserting Janine as under his possession. It seemed like he frequented the place quite a bit, treating her in a manner that suggested she belonged to him exclusively, almost as if she were his personal companion.
Meanwhile, the brothel sometimes provided her chances to evade him, like when Commander Lawrence unexpectedly arrived, or when Bell had to handle other duties.
In the realm of Gilead, it seems that Janine is now under his control, as far as I can tell. Until I, or someone else manages to break the shackles and liberate her, she remains in his grasp. Even Aunt Lydia, who initially seemed quite excited about Janine’s new assignment, appears to understand this reality now.
Following her petition for an audience, Bell declined, citing ominous reasons that she isn’t prepared for public exposure right now. However, Lydia managed to catch a brief sight of her as she stood by a window, her hand resting on the glass pane.
Janine’s face showed signs of swelling and bruising, and the brief moments of light – triggered by Lawrence handing her a drawing her daughter made and when June shared news about Mayday’s recent action – have now been permanently dimmed.
Later, a woman believed to be Bell’s spouse pulled her away, leaving Lydia in shock and dismay over the fate that had befallen her most cherished daughter.
However, a significant change seems imminent. Mayday is keeping a close watch on Serena’s upcoming wedding with Commander Wharton, and this time, there’s an unmistakable sense of something new.
But will it be too late for Janine?
