The Haunting of Hill House Creator's Certified-Fresh Horror Movie Returns to Streaming After Disappearance

As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Mike Flanagan’s films have been a staple in my horror movie collection. From the chilling “Doctor Sleep” to the spine-tingling “The Haunting of Hill House,” Flanagan’s work never fails to deliver a heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat experience.

Mike Flanagan’s movie titled “The Life of Chuck” made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and received favorable feedback. Shortly after, Neon secured it for a theater release in November of next year. Upon its release next year, it will be another work from the director known for films like “Doctor Sleep“, series such as “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Haunting of Hill House“, but he’s also the co-writer and director of the 2016 film “Hush“. This critically praised horror movie has earned a place as a classic and was available on Netflix for seven years before being taken off in 2023. Now, “Hush” can be streamed once more.

Starting October 1st, you can stream “Hush” on Shudder. This chilling film, jointly penned by Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel, is helmed by Flanagan as the director. The plot revolves around Maddie (played by Siegel), a horror writer who lost her hearing and speaking abilities in her teenage years due to an accident. After achieving success with her novel, Maddie relocates from New York City to a secluded woodland home, but her tranquility is shattered when a masked murderer emerges. Alongside Siegel, the film stars John Gallagher, Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, and Emma Graves.

The movie “Hush” is now streaming on Shudder, and this development adds to the buzz surrounding the film, which boasts a 93% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Previously, it was announced that the movie would have its first physical release on November 26th. Interestingly, it’s now accessible for digital viewing as well. So, if you don’t subscribe to Shudder, you can still catch the film, but you’ll need to wait a few more weeks before purchasing or renting it on platforms like Prime Video or other video-on-demand services.

Flanagan expressed his joy when it was revealed that the film, one particularly dear to him, would be available for digital rental or purchase, stating that Shout! seemed like an ideal place for its release. He is thrilled that people will soon have the opportunity to watch it.

If you happen to be a fan of Mike Flanagan’s 2021 Netflix series, “Midnight Mass,” and you haven’t watched his earlier film, “Hush” yet, I strongly recommend you do. The two are connected in a subtle way – in the movie, “Hush,” the title of Maddie’s novel is actually “Midnight Mass.

In 2021, Siegel mentioned that he became aware of the concept of “Midnight Mass” while working on the production of “Hush”. As a low-budget film, they sought a cost-effective story for the protagonist Maddie, who is an author in the narrative. To save costs, they didn’t have to purchase rights to any existing work. Remarkably, Mike had a long-dormant idea for a novel titled “Midnight Mass” with three chapters written. He suggested using that manuscript so they could utilize those pages and incorporate the story into their production.

She added, “We used it. If you look, there’s a screengrab in Hush where you’re looking at Maddie’s computer screen and it says, ‘The red and blue lights of the cop car twinkle off the Jesus fish.; That’s the first shot of Midnight Mass, which is, for those of you who haven’t read anything about it, a series about a small fishing community on an island that is very insular, and they have closed ranks. Then, a young priest arrives at the church and miracles begin to happen.”

Hush is now streaming on Shudder.
