Refreshingly returning to cinemas, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith harks back to a period when a showing of Star Wars was an unforgettable spectacle. Unlike today’s abundance of multiple TV series annually and numerous movies in production, there was less certainty about their eventual release. Nonetheless, even with occasional viewer exhaustion, the extra material for Star Wars has given rise to some of its most memorable moments. It has also deepened our understanding of characters and stories that typically remain under-explored on the silver screen. Interestingly, the most poignant scene in Revenge of the Sith gains more impact after watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
One captivating aspect of “The Clone Wars” is giving identities to the soldiers who fight with the Jedi in the Prequels. This series delves into the personalities of the clones, showing how the Emperor’s scheme for galactic control impacted them profoundly. However, this perspective is not one-sided, as the relationship between the Jedi and the Clones plays a significant role throughout the animated series. Interestingly, after gaining more insight into a single Jedi, their demise in “Revenge of the Sith” outshines the rest of the movie’s poignant moments in terms of tragedy.
Plo Koon Was Always a Friend to the Clones
In the Battle of Geonosis, the Jedi shift from maintaining peacekeepers to assuming command roles in a larger cosmic battle. Each Jedi Knight and Master is assigned their own group of clone soldiers, with Jedi Master Plo Koon being appointed leader of the 104th Battalion, also known as “the Wolf Pack.” This elite unit swiftly demonstrates its prowess, assisting Koon in tracing the Malevolence, a colossal Separatist ship led by General Grievous. Regrettably, General Grievous outmaneuvers the Republic forces pursuing him and annihilates them. Koon and a few of his Clones narrowly escape on an emergency pod, but their situation appears grim.
Although the clones thought they were disposable and the Republic wouldn’t seek them out, Koon demonstrated their significance to him, guaranteeing their survival. True to his word, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano appeared to save everyone. The Wolf Pack and Koon participated in numerous crucial battles, contributing to the shift of the Clone Wars in favor of the Republic. Tragically, much like other Jedi, Koon met his end at the hands of his own troops.
The Clone Wars Makes Plo Koon’s Death Revenge of the Sith‘s Saddest Loss
Without the backstory provided by “The Clone Wars”, “Revenge of the Sith” remains a profoundly tragic film. Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader results in significant casualties, including his wife, Padmé Amidala, and Jedi Master Mace Windu. Although their demises are heart-wrenching, Plo Koon’s death stands out as particularly poignant due to its sudden and seemingly anticlimactic nature. After triumphantly winning a battle on Cato Neimoidia, Koon was flying in his starfighter when Order 66 was issued, forcing his clone comrade to follow orders and shoot him down. In an instant, one of the most accomplished and modest Jedi was gone. Fortunately, Plo Koon’s bravery lived on, inspiring the Rebellion in their struggle against the Empire.
One clone that Koon manages to save in the skirmish against the Malevolence is Commander Wolffe. Throughout the Clone Wars, he commands the 104th Battalion, but eventually, his control chip is deactivated, leading him to reunite with clones Rex and Gregor. Their adventures continue in Star Wars Rebels, where they join forces with the Spectre Rebels, Jedi Kanan Jarrus, and Ezra Bridger to drive back the Empire from Lothal. This significant event during the Galactic Civil War is something Koon would have been honored to participate in himself.
