The Hurt Business: Does AEW Have Enough Room For Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin and MVP?

As a die-hard wrestling fan with years of following the industry under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation at the potential reunion of The Hurt Business in AEW. Having witnessed their dominance on WWE Monday Night Raw during the pandemic era, it’s hard not to be drawn back into their magnetic presence.

Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin, and MVP are no longer tied to WWE contracts. Each parted ways with the organization at different times; Benjamin was released in September 2023, making him the first to leave. Lashley and MVP ended their tenures later, as their contracts allegedly expired in August. Neither chose to renew their agreements. Since leaving WWE, both Benjamin and MVP have been active on the independent wrestling scene – Benjamin has wrestled for PROGRESS in the United Kingdom, while MVP made an appearance at GCW Bloodsport to initiate a match against Josh Barnett. In contrast, Lashley has kept a low profile in the wrestling world, with only a few cryptic social media posts suggesting his whereabouts.

Originally, Lashley, Benjamin, MVP, and later Cedric Alexander formed the popular WWE group known as The Hurt Business. This group ruled over Monday Night Raw during the pandemic period. Unfortunately, before WrestleMania 37, the team was abruptly disbanded, and despite some hints of a reunion, they never fully returned to active service within WWE. Now that their contracts with WWE have expired, it seems more a question of when and where rather than if The Hurt Business will reform again.

AEW Holds Discussions With The Hurt Business

The Hurt Business: Does AEW Have Enough Room For Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin and MVP?

All eyes have been on All Elite Wrestling as The Hurt Business’s new office of operations.

Recently, news surfaced that Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin, and MVP have been in talks with All Elite Wrestling (AEW). This follows a fortnight since a trademark for “The Hurt Syndicate” was registered by the same company responsible for trademarking “MVP” and “Strength of the Ghetto,” the latter being MVP’s theme song in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Does AEW Have Room For The Hurt Business?

“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”

The age-old principle often holds true for All Elite Wrestling’s approach to signing free agents. In 2024, AEW President Tony Khan made significant high-profile signings like Kazuchika Okada and Mercedes Mon?, both of whom have been frequently showcased across all AEW broadcasts.

Speaking as a dedicated fan, it’s undeniably frustrating to miss out on the skills of stars who have mysteriously gone absent for extended periods. Two names that instantly pop up are Miro and Ricky Starks, both beloved figures whose absence from our screens has been noticeable for more than half a year, with little clarity about their time off. Similarly, high-profile signings like Andrade and Keith Lee made impressive debuts in AEW but seemed to lose steam following their initial rivalries.

AEW’s Success With Booking Factions

In the cases you previously mentioned, it’s notable that each of the problematic signings was an individual athlete who competes alone.

Ever since AEW made its debut on TV in Fall 2019, it has been a realm of factions. Individuals who found it challenging to appear regularly on AEW Dynamite, went on to become weekly staples due to their ties with these groups. For instance, Angelo Parker and Matt Menard are part of Jericho Appreciation Society, Wheeler Yuta is in Blackpool Combat Club, while Shawn Spears is a member of The Pinnacle. This aspect benefits The Hurt Business as it’s more feasible to introduce a trio that collaborates with another large faction rather than trying to manage three new individual signings.

Two longstanding feuds are currently underway against the revamped Blackpool Combat Club (BCC) and The Elite. In their respective conflicts, BCC has been paired with Darby Allin and Bryan Danielson, while The Elite have engaged in both singles and tag team matches as they protect their titles. Each side has enjoyed numerical superiority in these rivalries.

Killing Two Booking Birds With One Stone

The Hurt Business serves as a direct, organic counterpart for either of these teams. If AEW requires an additional member to balance things out perfectly, they can accomplish two tasks at once by integrating Ricochet into their ranks.

MVP recently revealed that he wanted Ricochet and Cedric Alexander for The Hurt Business in WWE but was told he could only pick one. He opted for Alexander in thinking that Ricochet didn’t need the boost as much. Ricochet’s AEW run only began a couple of weeks ago, but fans are already questioning where he fits in the company’s long-term vision following his inevitable feud with Will Ospreay. Linking him up with The Hurt Business not only gives him more direction but also proactively solves his looming promo problems by making MVP his mouthpiece.

Under the AEW umbrella, businesses can thrive, yet their longevity relies on the commitment of the company to sustain investment over time.
