Despite the fact that death appears to be a temporary setback for the Thunder God, it’s only the end of Act One. Al Ewing, who has previously written comics with “Immortal” in the title, such as The Immortal Hulk and The Immortal Thor, is now gearing up for the resurrection of Thor in Thor #1, which will be released on July 2nd along with artist Pasqual Ferry. There are still many unanswered questions though, like what happens in Immortal Thor #25 and where we continue the story in Thor #1.
In an interview prior to the releases of Immortal Thor #25 and Thor #1, ComicBook chatted with writer Al Ewing about various aspects of these upcoming series. He shared insights on moving Thor from Asgard to Earth, details about his new supporting characters, upcoming challenges both old and new, contrasts between launching All-New Venom #1 and Thor #1, what awaits readers in the second act of his Thor storyline, and collaborating with artist Pasqual Ferry. ComicBook also has an exclusive sneak peek at lettered pages for Immortal Thor #25 by Jan Bazaldua, Matt Hollingsworth, and VC’s Joe Sabino, as well as covers and solicitations for September issues of Thor #2.
In a new and engaging manner, the narrative of Thor, who has often faced death and rebirth, shifts from Asgard and Utgard to Earth in issue #1. How do I craft this transformation for readers while maintaining an air of suspense about how Thor is alive once more and coexisting with mortals?
Al Ewing: I’m in a tricky situation since I don’t want to reveal the storyline of the book, but promoting a comic within our existing framework requires disclosing some details, such as covers. These small bits can lead to incorrect assumptions. However, many questions you might assume you know the answers to will be addressed accurately with Immortal Thor #25. Once that issue is released, I’ll be able to discuss my ideas and plans more openly.
Regarding your query, I have my unique methods when it comes to crafting grand, mythical tales in Asgard contrasted with the intimate, earthbound narratives. For this upcoming series, however, I intend to utilize all the storytelling tools at my disposal.
In simpler terms, could you provide some information about the characters who assist Thor in his adventures? Are we going to join Thor as he regains consciousness on Earth, or will other characters give us their perspective throughout the story?
Leaving out the main character completely in a story can lead to complications – these I refer to as “issues” in “Tales of Asgard”. However, it seems the underlying query may be whether our hero has a possible new romantic interest. Indeed, he does!
It’s fascinating how the latest Thor series and All-New Venom seem to share some similarities, as both stories appear to be scaling down the action from cosmic adventures to street-level exploits. Could you elaborate on the comparisons and contrasts you noticed when launching Thor #1 against All-New Venom #1?

Frankly, I wouldn’t choose — referring to the “I reject the question” guy with a ponytail — because I sincerely believe it wouldn’t benefit either story in any way. However, under extreme compulsion, I’d say that All-New Venom initially adopted an old-fashioned mystery approach to establish a foundation for examining and valuing traditional solo hero comics. This playful narrative style served as a reflection of the dual protagonists’ implicit or explicit use of Peter Parker as a moral benchmark. Conversely, the new Thor comic isn’t following that path at all.
Moving forward, we’ve reached the second act in your tale about Thor. What challenges will the God of Thunder encounter during this fresh chapter, as he simultaneously navigates his self-rediscovery following his death?
I’ll avoid directly addressing certain aspects since they rest on questionable foundations, but if you’re curious about who might be featured in the book, here’s a hint: The Enchantress is still up to something, although her actions are currently more subtle. For now, let’s focus on newcomers. In this story, we’ll encounter the Sons of the Serpent for the first time. Additionally, keep an eye out for familiar faces like Cobra, Mister Hyde, Grey Gargoyle, and Radioactive Man, as they are likely to reappear.
To conclude, let’s talk about your collaboration with veteran Thor artist Pasqual Ferry. Can you share your experience receiving his artwork, and what aspects of his contributions are you particularly excited for the audience to witness?
There’s no doubt about it – Pasqual is extraordinarily talented in his craft. His work has a unique, almost magical quality to it, and having witnessed it firsthand, I’m figuring out the best approach to leverage his extensive and varied abilities. He’s dived headfirst into the initial challenge with immense enthusiasm, and I can’t wait for you to see what he’s created. You won’t be disappointed!
