The Inbetweeners star reveals idea for third movie as he confirms reunion talks

As a movie critic who grew up with The Inbetweeners, hearing the possibility of a revival brings back memories of cringy laughs and relatable moments from my own teenage years. I have to admit, I was utterly guileless during those times too, sharing many of the characters’ awkward experiences without a care in the world.

Approximately ten years following the release of the second movie and final episode from The Inbetweeners series, Joe Thomas hinted at a potential sequel.

On the Always Be Comedy podcast, Thomas was questioned about his interest in participating in a remake of the series, where the plot revolved around four high school friends.

Thomas mentioned that discussions about a possible comeback, in different shapes, have taken place. He also expressed his willingness to collaborate with the cast once more in the future.

He added: “My primary concern with repeating it is that I feel I’ve become more guarded. Simply because I’m older doesn’t mean I lost my innocence from that show; I shared everything openly, all the time.”

“I’m concerned that my age and numerous personal limitations might pose a problem. Ideally, things would remain similar, in essence.”

When asked about a potential revival being a movie or a series, Thomas expressed his doubt about a new series due to the fact that the original series concluded with the characters finishing school. He suggested that such a revival would require an intelligent solution to continue the story in a new series.

“I believe a film succeeds when it has a strong concept, and this one certainly does. It’s a project I’m genuinely excited about, and despite the challenges, I still feel a great camaraderie with everyone involved.”

Thomas too pondered over the question of how old the characters should be in the remake, noting that while they could appear younger than their actual ages, there was a limit to just how young they could portray them.

As a movie enthusiast, I proposed that a sequel might focus on a wild bachelor party escapade or an exhilarating adventure in the neon lights of Las Vegas. Alternatively, the series could return with a fresh twist as the gang reunites and joins a competitive five-a-side football team.

“He noted that everyone is still present, our relationships continue, and we all continue to hold a fondness for one another.”

If the need arises, I believe we’d be inclined to go ahead with it. Honestly, I sincerely speak when I say this: primarily, everyone’s concern would be, “Will it turn out well?”

Previously, Thomas’ fellow actor, James Buckley, indicated a reunion wasn’t likely, and at that point in time, it seemed like everyone in the cast agreed with him on this matter.

He said: “I think if we could have all stayed 19 forever, and if it would still be funny, we would have done it forever. It was the best job in the world.”

He went on saying, “They’re my friends, and I thoroughly enjoy their company. We spent the entire time laughing as we carried out our activities together.”

“It’s truly unfortunate and a bit disheartening, don’t you agree? I believe one of the guys, perhaps Joe Thomas, is turning 40 this year. It’s just not a pleasant situation, is it?”
