The Invasion – LIMITED EDITION 4K UHD / BLU-RAY

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of watching and analyzing films under my belt, I must say that ‘The Invasion‘ is a film that leaves me with mixed feelings. On one hand, it boasts an impressive cast, including Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, and it offers a compelling narrative that taps into our collective fears of pandemics and alien invasions. On the other hand, it falls short in comparison to its predecessors, particularly the 1956 and 1978 versions, which are undeniably classics in their own right.

Jack Finney’s novel ‘The Body Snatchers’ was a perfect choice for Hollywood adaptation, as it presented a science fiction tale about an extraterrestrial virus that took control of humans, using them as hosts in its quest to conquer Earth. This story could also be interpreted on multiple levels, and the 1956 film version directed by Don Siegel, where a small-town doctor discovers his community being replaced by alien replicas, was seen as a symbol for communism, ultimately becoming a sci-fi classic.

In this rendition, a spacecraft carrying an extraterrestrial organism crashed to Earth, causing people to undergo transformations, exhibiting detachment and loss of emotions. One such individual is Dr. Tucker Kaufman, the director of the CDC, who is probing the crash incident. Simultaneously, his ex-wife, psychiatrist Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman), notices similar changes in a friend’s son and one of her patients, whose husband no longer seems familiar. As an ominous sickness sweeps across Washington D.C., with infections rapidly spreading like wildfire, Carol must work tirelessly to safeguard herself and their son, who might be the key to halting this relentless alien intrusion.

In this project, action producer Joel Silver brought on board Oliver Hirschbiegel, the German director famous for his film ‘Downfall’ about Hitler’s last days which gained widespread recognition and internet fame thanks to Bruno Ganz’s portrayal of Hitler shouting “Nein Nein Nein”. Nicole Kidman was cast as the main character, while Daniel Craig, who later became James Bond, joined the production. However, just after filming began, the studio grew dissatisfied and enlisted the Wachowski siblings to rewrite certain scenes and hired James McTeigue to direct those newly written parts at considerable cost.

Initially released was a movie titled ‘The Invasion’, which wasn’t terrible and, considering the recent global pandemic that originated from China (often referred to as the Chinese virus), the film seems eerily predictive now. However, it failed to resonate with audiences, earning only $40 million globally – about half of its production cost. Regrettably, a behind-the-scenes feature discussing the challenges faced by the film is not available among the bonus features on this newly released Blu-ray edition of The Invasion. Instead, we’re provided with…

The Invasion, while not terrible, doesn’t quite measure up to the first two movies in the series, each of which earned classic status. For an action producer like Joel Silver, known for hits such as Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Predator, it lacks the expected level of action, instead opting for a more confined, tense atmosphere.

The bonus content varies, offering a blend of archival interviews from the movie’s premiere, providing glimpses into the production process, but unfortunately includes commentary tracks by critics and experts – opinions that seldom meet expectations when what one yearns for is the director’s insights. Similarly, the ‘visual essays’ are typically found in an academic setting, and here they seem somewhat out of place, making this 4K UHD limited edition re-release more suitable for diehard fans of the novel’s multiple adaptations and remakes.
