One of ‘s most iconic films is about to have a brand-new streaming home.
1979’s “The Jerk” is set to join Netflix’s extensive collection of popular comedies, making it available for streaming from May 1st onwards.
Titled “The Jerk,” this film was helmed by director Carl Reiner from a script penned by Martin Ritch, Carl Gottlieb, and Michael Elias. It tells the tale of a homeless man residing in Los Angeles who narrates his life’s journey, humorously starting with the memorable line, “I was born a poor white man.” The movie traces the path of the blissfully unaware Navin, who remains oblivious to even the most apparent truths. He aspires to become a dancer and finds himself ensnared in a series of increasingly absurd situations as his quest for stardom unfolds. Joining Martin on this comedic journey was an impressive ensemble cast that included Bernadette Peters, Catlin Adams, Richard Ward, Dick O’Neill, Mabel King, and Bill Macy.
The Jerk Was Steve Martin’s First Starring Role in a Feature Film
Upon its debut in 1979, the movie ‘The Jerk’ became a massive hit at the cinema, earning over $100 million against a production cost of just $4 million. During its initial screening, it impressed most critics, with many praising Martin’s acting skills and comedy talent. Four years later in 1984, NBC produced a TV sequel titled ‘The Jerk, Too’, which was partly written and produced by Martin. However, instead of Martin, Mark Blankfield played the role of Navin for another round of comedic escapades.
Enthusiasts of Martin’s creative output are now brimming with excitement as they eagerly look forward to the debut of Only Murders in the Building Season 5. This popular blend of comedy and mystery finds Martin portraying Charles-Haden Savage, a partially retired actor who forms an alliance with Martin Short’s semi-retired director Oliver Putnam and Selena Gomez’s emerging artist Mabel Mora to delve into a string of murders within and surrounding their cherished apartment building – The Arconia. Only Murders in the Building further traces the trio as they transform their investigations into episodes of their successful in-show podcast with the same title, which stirs up its fair share of complications (and rivalries). It was recently announced that Season 5 will introduce a multitude of guest stars.
The Jerk will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning May 1.
