The Jetty star addresses “repercussions” of Ember’s lie in finale

As a movie reviewer with a background in psychology, I found The Jetty to be a thought-provoking and emotionally charged crime thriller that left me pondering long after the final credits rolled. The revelation that Ember, the lead detective, was the one who killed Amy Knightley, was a shocking twist that challenged my assumptions about her character and raised questions about the blurred lines between truth, justice, and personal circumstances.

In the final episode of The Jetty, a BBC crime series set in a northern lakeside town, detective Ember Manning uncovers a shocking revelation concerning a fire, the exploitation of underage girls, and an unsolved missing-person case.

Seventeen years ago, Amy Knightley went missing, and her late husband Malachy and his best friend Arj were among the last people to see her alive. Contrary to rumors, neither Malachy nor Arj was the one who took Amy’s life.

Instead of saying “No, it was the detective herself who killed Amy after she struck her with a car while driving under the influence of drugs given to her by Malachy on her birthday,” you could also express it as:

During her argument with Arj, memories of the tragic night resurface within her. He confessed to murdering podcaster Riz and burning down the boat house to conceal any traces of Amy’s burial.

Instead of admitting the truth to the authorities, Ember unexpectedly chooses to let Arj, who later takes his own life by setting himself on fire, bear the responsibility.

“Caitlin wonders if you believe truth and justice are synonymous,” she queries, attempting to dissuade Ember from following a potentially problematic course.

While Ember was driving the car, Malachy’s influence on her cannot be denied.

Perhaps her mother could comment on the situation between her and Caitlin. However, since only they know their secret, there won’t be any immediate consequences if she speaks up. But once the secret is shared with others, it can spread uncontrollably.

Ruby Stokes, expressing her role as Hannah, the daughter of Ember, added that individuals often ponder over how they would react in specific circumstances. Yet, she emphasized, true understanding only comes when one experiences the situation firsthand.

As a movie buff, I’d put it this way: “When it comes to handling challenging situations, everyone has their unique approach. I’m not quite certain anyone could accurately predict or instruct another person on how they would react.”

When she began reading the scripts for the first time, Stokes admitted she had no clue whatsoever about where the story was heading.

She remarked, “I found it intriguing that the person we were cheering for turned out to be the one who did something wrong. It’s surprising how Arj is portrayed as a good guy… only for him to later commit a harmful act. I really enjoyed this twist in the story.”

Renaux expressed his shock, admitting he was just as clueless, and further explained that Arj’s deep connections with Ember and Mack, along with Ember’s intense desire to unravel the mystery, made the revelation all the more poignant.

“She invested so much time, energy, and feelings into uncovering the truth, but unfortunately found herself right back at the beginning,” he explained.

“It does make it more heartbreaking.”
