The Just Cause Movie Just Took a Big Step Forward (And Fans Should Be Excited)

Looks like fans will be experiencing The Scorpion ahead of schedule! Over the past few days, there’s been an influx of video game adaptations announced, including a Sleeping Dogs film featuring Simu Liu, a Beyond Two Souls TV series produced by Elliot Page, and a live-action Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 project. Although some are still in the planning stages, another project has made significant progress. It was confirmed back in May that Universal Pictures is creating a film adaptation from a video game for the big screen, with Blue Beetle’s Ángel Manuel Soto directing a movie based on the Square Enix and Avalanche Studios game series, Just Cause. Recently, this project has received a significant update.

As reported by TheWrap, Aaron Rabin, who has written Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series, is slated to script the adaptation of Just Cause. Despite this being his first venture into video game adaptations, Rabin is no novice in the action-packed realm at Universal, having co-written the upcoming action-thriller Nobody 2 with Derek Kolstad (John Wick screenwriter), Umair Aleem, and Bob Odenkirk (Nobody’s star). Given his extensive background in adaptation work, particularly with Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, viewers can expect an exhilarating journey alongside Rico Rodriguez.

Nobody 2‘s Aaron Rabin Is Set to Write Universal Studios’ Just Cause Film Adaptation

The movie adaptation of “Just Cause” has faced some ups and downs throughout its journey, with discussions about it happening in Hollywood since 2010. Back in 2015, there was a hint that the storyline of Just Cause 3 might hit the big screen, but this didn’t pan out. However, in 2017, fans of Just Cause were heartened by news that Brad Peyton, director of San Andreas, would lead the project and Jason Mamoa, a star from DCEU, would portray Rico Rodriguez. By 2020, Michael Dowse, who directed 8-Bit Christmas, had replaced Peyon, but no details emerged about the film’s advancements or Mamoa’s participation.

It’s uncertain if Mamoa will continue as a secret agent, considering his recent casting as Lobo in the upcoming “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” movie. However, it’s interesting to mention that he recently wrapped up filming for Ángel Manuel Soto’s “The Wrecking Crew.” Initially, when this project was announced, Soto was gearing up for production on a Mamoa-Bautista action-comedy film. This implies that the production of “Just Cause” might start sooner than anticipated.

In the mystery surrounding the movie’s storyline, the Just Cause game series centers around Rico Rodriguez, who endeavors to dismantle corrupt governments worldwide. The 2006 video game franchise has garnered acclaim for its expansive open-world design, groundbreaking gameplay mechanics, and exaggerated sandbox format. Since 2018’s Just Cause 4, the series hasn’t introduced a new installment, receiving mixed feedback from both fans and critics. With Aaron Rabin joining the project and Ángel Manuel Soto becoming available, it appears that this action-packed venture is moving forward at last, promising to captivate audiences soon.
